salvage boat

Wes, a newer 30 ft. boat is worth repairing depending upon amout of damage, would have a good survey done before I parted out boat.If indeed you are going to part it out you could sell everthing (whole boat as is) or parts on this web site (used gear section) or E Bay. My first thought would be to repair the boat unless it has major damage, you did not indicate how badly the boat is hurt. I would caution you to represent any mechanical item as salvaged as opposed to used as they have may have been subject to water damage.Good Luck !

First, you need to find out whether you CAN

salvage it. Just the fact that it's there doesn't make it salvageable. It did belong to someone...it may have stolen, stripped and abandoned...abandoned at sea and floated in...a dozen possible scenarios that could make YOU guilty of theft if you just grab it and start taking it apart or repairing it without a clear "title" to it. For starters, check the HIN with the CG...they'll be able to tell you what else you need to do to claim it if it's claimable.

Wes, You cant take parts of a stranded boat

that is beached on state property. Contact the state marine patrol or CG to get salvage info. Every state is different. I know because this happened to my boat here in Florida. Some kids stole my boat, went joy riding and then left it adrift in the gulf. It was recovered by a fisherman 200 miles away and towed to his house. I had made a police report but that was only in my county. He contacted the police but no boats were reported missing in his county. Before he could take salvage rights, he was required by law to make a "reasonable attempt" to contact the owner. The kids stripped the registration numbers off, but he was able to find me by looking up the serial number at the tag office. He called me and I got my boat back. Had he not been able to contact me with in 6 months the boat would have been his. Ted

Wes and the salvaged boat

Wes, after reading the other post let me say that I assumed (you know what they say)that you had a legal right to the boat. Please make sure you do before you do anything !

Wanted to salvage 45' bayliner off bottom

In the late 80's we had a new 45' Bayliner dissapear from our marina. Very suspicious. We did home work on currents and tides around a point where people reported sighting a sinking vessel. Several Dives doing 360' circles around anchors gave us one missing bayliner, scuttled for sure. Ins company says owner still ownes her, they're not paying on the claim. Guess they think he had something to do with it. Owner says it's in litigation. We did get a very hefty finders fee for our efforts but no boat. Oh well, Guess we'll have to try treasure hunting next! By the way, she is still there.

Stay Clear

SALVAGE is a very complicated issue in maritime law. As others have said the owners still have rights. But a larger issue is who is responsible. Once you disturb the vessel, then any fuel or oil leakage may be deemed to be your responsibility. Oil spill clean up from even a few gallons of diesel can cost tens of thousands of dollars. Then there is the issue of the hull. Can it be moved? If not and you claim salvage rights then you will most likely be responsible for removing the wreck. Trying to obtain a title to a SALVAGE vessel will probably involve a lawyer. That alone will cost. I am a Marine Surveyor and deal with salvage issues on a regular basis. They are complicated and the potential risks are great. Be careful VERY CAREFUL Dan Sheehan
