Last summer I was lucky enough to acquire a Vega which had been mouldering on the hard for about a decade. She was all there, along with a lot of mildew, but my initial thought was that I would have to scrap the engine. Not so. I managed to get the 022 started with an investment of only $11.00 (Cdn., mind you). The money went to new spark plugs. Before starting I also cleaned out the fuel filter and lines, cleaned out the fuel tank, and removed the cylinder head so that I could tap on two valves which were stuck open. Great to be able to remove the cylinder head without messing up the valve timing. Valves freed, I put her back together and lo and behold, she started. Didn't run long, mind you, but filled me with optimism. I ordered a new fuel pump and a water pump impeller from Albin Motor and she ran a little longer but then stalled. Over the winter I discovered another fuel filter, clogged, which I replaced with a modern cartridge style one. Last week it was with some trepidation that I began the voyage, with a friend, to bring my boat home to the other end of Lake Ontario. I still didn't trust the engine, having not tested it since lat year, but by the end of the third day, when the engine had run for hours, I was in love. The engine was turning over slowly at starting so this week I had the Bosch starter/generator rebuilt. Considering the cost of a replacement, I'm delighted I didn't scrap the 022. I think it has earned a new coat of paint. Another thing I discovered last week, the first time I sailed my boat (1454) is her amazing sailing qualities. So beautifully balanced. A delight.
