I love my Albin 022

Last summer I was lucky enough to acquire a Vega which had been mouldering on the hard for about a decade. She was all there, along with a lot of mildew, but my initial thought was that I would have to scrap the engine. Not so. I managed to get the 022 started with an investment of only $11.00 (Cdn., mind you). The money went to new spark plugs. Before starting I also cleaned out the fuel filter and lines, cleaned out the fuel tank, and removed the cylinder head so that I could tap on two valves which were stuck open. Great to be able to remove the cylinder head without messing up the valve timing. Valves freed, I put her back together and lo and behold, she started. Didn't run long, mind you, but filled me with optimism. I ordered a new fuel pump and a water pump impeller from Albin Motor and she ran a little longer but then stalled. Over the winter I discovered another fuel filter, clogged, which I replaced with a modern cartridge style one. Last week it was with some trepidation that I began the voyage, with a friend, to bring my boat home to the other end of Lake Ontario. I still didn't trust the engine, having not tested it since lat year, but by the end of the third day, when the engine had run for hours, I was in love. The engine was turning over slowly at starting so this week I had the Bosch starter/generator rebuilt. Considering the cost of a replacement, I'm delighted I didn't scrap the 022. I think it has earned a new coat of paint. Another thing I discovered last week, the first time I sailed my boat (1454) is her amazing sailing qualities. So beautifully balanced. A delight.

Yes you have a fine boat. It amazes me how we threw over boats like
her that sail so well for fat fin keeled ones that are directionally
fickle and so unpleasing to the eye. And as well slow turning long
sroke engines that can be cranked and run and run and run. There is
no way any reasonable person would ever expect that little Albin
engine to ever make another pop. Congratulations on you good
judgement.

Thanks Doug. Typically I don't rank myself a reasonable person, but in this case I definitely did the reasonable thing. It really took very little work and money to get it running reliably. Another great thing about it is that it can be hand started with very little juice from the starter. My boat has directional stability I expeced with the longish keel but it has less of the turning-sluggishness I expected from same. Win-win-win.
