We probably won't be hearing anything from those of you in the NE for a day or three. Let me just wish the best for each and every one of you. I know what your going through, as I have been there, done that. No fun, but just be safe,

Have not been out to the boats this morning but MaineSail checked on them last night and they were riding nicely. Not a whole lot of impact here otherwise. Some downed trees and power lines but very little rain.

no power, using cell internet. boat survived fine, marine was within inches of floating off the pilings and floating away. the boardwalk was destroyed, and of course most owners with canvas up, lost it.

N&E...

Won't get down to the boat until tomorrow but fellow club member posted videos on YouTube of our marina yesterday during the storm and pictures this am after the eye had passed.

My boat rode it out well as did almost all others. The boats next and two over from me apparently were rubbing together at one point, but that was the only damage evident on all the boats pictured.

Currently there is about six feet of high water above the normal high tide in our marina. It's about a foot deep on our fixed dockage, but our floating docks are riding high and well.

Lots of power outages up in Penna. where I live, along with storm damages such as trees down and roads flooded. It could have been a lot worse!

I just got back from my Club. It's a disaster!! Our floating docks came up and over the pilings, severe of the large boats out on moorings broke loose, came inside our docks and wreaked more havoc. ALL the boats on the hard floated off their stands and most were damaged.

However.....My Southern Belle, that I tied off in a double slip facing Northeast, with boats to me right and left all tied to common fingers...survived! Our "nest" obviously held us together and my 14 lines spread the load beautifully. The only damage I have is where my bow pulpit was struck by at least one of the stray boats and my swim ladder stand-offs were bent from possibly striking the dock behind me. Strangely, there is no paint left on my rudder and it's not a hang on?? Our 3 neighboring Marinas also sustained catastrophic damage. But.....no one was hurt and we can repair or replace. It will not be an easy task, but at least we can...........

Correction: EIGHTEEN lines spread around the boat. I had 8 spring lines holding me off the dock behind (west of me).

One news story reports police as saying it will be 10 days before homeowners will be allowed on the island.

Several bayside towns on the western shore of Barnegat Bay are reported to be in bad shape also. Waretown, Barnegat, Manahawkin, Beach Haven West are four that were mentioned to have been hit hard and some areas still flooded.

Postcards from NJ ....

This has been quite the experience. Our power is out as it is for about 60 percent or more of all residents in the state. They are talking about up to 2 weeks or more until power is restored. Cable and Internet is out too. We have a small generator keeping our fridge, some lights and blue ray active. We're not hard wired so no heat or well water for us. We filled bathtubs with water & have our wood burning stove to stay comfortable (actually its pretty cozy). The biggest problem is going to be gasoline. Only a few stations are open and lines are now hours long. It looks like some stations are only filling cans for people to fuel generators. Deliveries seem to have been halted and stations have closed after their fuel ran out. We would be good for a few more days but my employer wants us on the road to serve our clients with any emergency needs. I was in Long Branch today at a building that lost its roof and their front doors are damaged and propped open. Most people evacuated (it was mandatory) but a few remained.
Happily, Thunderbird is secure in her slip.I was worried when the wind knocked down 3 huge trees on the fringes of our property but I think it swung from north to east and eventually south - all protected exposures in our cove. One tree fell across the road and landed on the power lines in front of our yard. Amazingly, the lines stretched to hold the tree up but the poles still stand. Some fools still drive under the tree which is suspended just inches above the roofs of cars that fit under.
Sue provided comic relief as her son describes her battle with Sears over the generator. She bought it on-line and it was prepaid. They were supposed to call her when it arrived at the store for delivery. They never called so Sue and her son went to Sears to find out what gives. It turns out they gave it to somebody else somehow and claimed they called her and she had already been there to get it. Cory got there earlier to hear there story and by the time Sue arrived the were closing the store and basically hiding from her because she was beginning to throw a fit. She made it clear that they weren't getting out until they resolved the dispute by handing her a generator. They had a few in hiding so she eventually came home with a different model than she ordered. We lost our power only a few hours after she got home with the generator.

Scott,
After Katrina, I was out of commercial power for about a month. The company I work for placed a large diesel at my house for the duration and subsequently for Gustav and other storms. They can be a little slow getting out and there's no guarantee they will come-through in the future, so I decided to purchase one. I wanted a large unit that ran on natural gasand powered the entire house. This was going to cost around $6-8k with me doing some of the work. My house is plumbed for natural gas, so the only large electrical draw is the central air conditioner and I'd need at least a 15kw to start it. Hopefully your power will be restored soon, but summertime in south Louisiana where it will remain above 80F and high humidity at night, can be a real motivator and the price becomes a non issue. My wife asked what if we just picked up a couple of window unit a/c's and a smaller generator. I started looking into this and it was much cheaper - <$2k to run the entire house and a few small window units. Well, to make a long story short, and the whole point I'm getting at, I purchased a 7kw gasoline portable, but converted it to run on natural gas. I don't worry about finding gasoline or waiting in the long lines, price increases, etc. I bought the conversion kit from these guys. They have some videos of similar setups to what I have. I don't worry about fuel, running gas out of the carb, storing gasoline, etc. The kit cost me around $250, fuel line was about $200 with quick fittings and the gen was around $1100. Throw in the window unit air conditioners, a small transfer switch, and miscellaneous electrical stuff and I'm still a good bit <$2k total. I put it to the test after Isaac. My power was out for 3 days. It worked so well, I didn't request one from work ( i also knew this was no Katrina and my power would be restored soon). The engine runs very smooth and exceptionally clean. It's easy to start and will still run on gasoline if necessary without having to make modifications.

Electrically, I back-feed my central air compressor unit circuit which is rated for 40amps. I leave all of my breakers on and have the convenience of turning lights and ceiling fans on or plugging something into any outlet, but do have to realize the limitations of a 7kw generator. I tested it running two window unit A/C's - 4KBTU & 10KBTU, 9 ceiling fans and attached light fixtures, one desktop computer, one 50 inch plasma TV, two full sized refrigerators, one freezer, and several small items like router, alarm clocks, etc. I was trying to push it to the limit and decided to heat a cup of water in the microwave at full power. The voltage and frequency took a slight hit as the generator rev'd, but stablized within a few seconds. While that was running, I ran a pot of water through the coffee pot ( another power hog) and that is where the voltage stayed good, but the 60Hz frequency couldn't recover. I will never run all of that stuff at the same time, but rest comfortably while it's running. Otherwise, I would be watching meters connected to it all the time.

If you're just trying to run a few appliances and don't get extended power outages much, my system could be a little overkill, but when gasoline becomes a real pain to fine and high priced, NG at about 1/4 the price for the same BTU's, everyday life can have a semblance of normality. I usually work alot after storms and needed something that my wife could handle without having to go searching for gasoline and handling heavy 5-6 gallon cans. If anyone has any need like this, I highly recommend it. My brother-inlaw did the same thing, but had a 100 gallon propane tank installed. He runs a grill and his 6kw generator. He has it topped off at the beginning of each hurricane season and he estimates it would run about two weeks straight.

you all be careful cleaning up. typically more people are injured after the storm during cleanup. I was wondering how the rest of the state did. change the oil every other day on the genny. How many amps? and do you know how to hook it up to your house panel? once you can do that its much more efficient.

I think Morgan is in the same area as Laurence Harbor. There is a boatyard named Lockwood Marina with many slips and ground storage. It's well up the creek and well protected from Raritan Bay but from the looks of it, the damage was major. You can see all the destruction from the GS Parkway. I think it is exposed to wind across a large expanse of swamp land and it also looks like the surge pushed many boats way up the banks and on top of another. I saw dozens of masts raked over from boats that look like they were blown off their stands. It did not look pretty in that creek.
