"Picking up the hat" is a bit like the MOB but it is more like a "snatch and grab" in that I don't need to hang around the stopping point. Instead of a figure 8 it is more like a circle. A "chicken gibe" works best for me since usually the wind is blowing, which is why my hat blew off in the first place.
As far as cutting the jib for MOB or a lost hat, you're got to cut the jib sheet loose or the boat will never stop. Dropping the jib is the last thing I'd do. Another thing is that "someone" on board has to keep an eye on the person in the water in a MOB situation. With a hat or winch handle it is no big deal but with MOB it is a big deal. I think your only course of action is to let it flog but be quick about it.
