I have a 1988 Catatina 30 with a universal 25XP and Hurst transmission. Transmission will not stay engaged in forward. Checked all cables, linkages and adjustments to no avail. Mechanic says rebuild or get new one. Any experience out there with this one? Should I rebuild or buy new? Thanks.

Rebuild...

I have a '87 TRBS. Had mine rebuilt 2 years ago. No problems. Rebuild was much less than a new one.

Are you sure?

(its Hurth, not Hurst, by the way) Have you disconnected the cable at the transmission gear selection lever and worked the lever by hand? This is a sure way to eliminate the linkages/cables as a trouble source. jv

I assume you are using the correct fluid and have checked the level correctly?

Pretty Sure

Disconnected cable and operated lever by hand while motor running. Will go into forward but slips, providing less than 30% of power it should (this done by diesel mechanic with VG reputation in my area). Any other ideas?

Fluid Checked

Fluid checked. Trans was working fine all Summer, starting shifting hard, then very hard, then starting slipping.

Baked Transmission

My partner rescued a power boat a few weeks ago and literally baked our tranny. We had it rebuilt by Coast Marine here in MDR. Has been working great since..New was quoted circa $1500 parts. Rebuild was $400.

Time for a rebuild & here's why

I believe that the Universal 25XPs were installed with undersized transmissions (Hurth, not Hurst). They tend to go out after several years of service. The friction plate gets glazed & you'll need a rebuild. There are some posts (check archives) about running some Mineral spirits in the tranny to clean the friction plates & extend it's life, but a freind tried it to no avail...
