Our boat was damaged by Hurricane Ivan. Mast broken at welded joint, rudder broken, port side of boat scarred, scratched and gouged, forstay/furler/jib gone, etc.. but we were lucky our boat can be fixed. We have questions: 1. where our hull is all scratched and gouged, can this be repaired in just the damaged areas like they would do to a car? or will we have to have the entire hull painted to get it looking good again? How will insurance see this? 2. can one contractor take care of all problems or do we have to sub out the mast to one, sails to another, fiberglass work to another? We live 250 miles from the boat so we would like to just turn it over to someone to handle for us, also there is nowhere to stay down there after the hurricane, all rooms are taken by contractors and people whose homes were destroyed, so we can't stay there to make repairs. Has someone out there been through this before? Our insurance surveyor has done his thing but we still haven't seen the report. There is a 3-4 month waiting list to get hauled out, we were lucky to find a surviving slip to rent while we await our turn.

repairs ..........

A good fiberglass shop can fix the hull damage and repair the gelcoat. Don't paint it unless you have to (or it needed to be painted before the damage) I find gelcoat repair work great but the new color ages differently than the hull over time and repairs spots are seen. Rudders can be repaired by anyone or replace by Al Walker at Foss Foam. A good service yard usually subs some work out but I hear folks are busy down there. Here in America money talks. $$ will determine how long you wait.

Coordinated By Surveyor

In my experiencce, the surveyor will coordinate repair. Yes, different trades will be required. I have seen great gelcoat matches, but discuss this with your surveyor, You may be able to add some money and have the entire hull re-gellcoated for nominal additional cost. Don't worry about the actual fiberglass repair. That should be an easy fix. The mast section is an easy fix if it's just the weld that cracked. Hunter will help with a replacement if it's beyond repair. It will all come together in the end. Just expect repairs to take longer than expected and to be annoyed in the process. Keep in touch but be friendly, not demanding, for best cooperation. Good luck. Rick D.

Pensacola Help

I live in Pensacola and know what a mess it really is. I can't get my boat hauled out either. I would be glad to help you out if you need anything. As far as the scratches: If they are really deep; gelcoat repair is needed; if they are superficial somne may be buffed out; if others are really large as in cover a large surface area it may be best to get the entire hull painted. If you take your boat to Trendell they can do it all(they are based out of Pensacola shipyard) they are EXTREMELY EXPENSIVE but they are very good. Watson Marine and Chet Ruminski are just as good. The best person for sails is Hunter at Schur sails.
