Our 4JH2-TE does not have glow plugs. Something is preventing the fuel from getting into the engine. Genset and main engine normally have separate fuel supply lines, filters, etc. Cannot tell from the photo what function that device performs.

That little device I beleive is for the engine bay fire extinguisher system - think it used to be Halon? - when the fire suppression system discharges the extinguishing agent it also trips a switch to stop the engine. I beleive some systems have a tendency to leak, eventually the low pressure in the extinguisher system causes the switch to trip cutting off the engine.

Having your fire suppression system serviced/repaired should return your engine to normal operation.

Thats what I thought, checked the fire bottle in the engine bay and it right in the middle of the green ark.

If the green charge light isn't coming on you'll need to trouble shoot the system. From one of their manuals these are the suggestions to trouble shoot. note that a failed fuse or a burned out indicator light will cause the system to stop the engine as will wire breaks, shorts or corrosion.

"INDICATOR LIGHT OPERATION

All Sea-Fire extinguishers approved for marine applications are packaged with an indicator light and escutcheon. The indicator light (unless replaced by another Sea-Fire method) must be installed for system supervision and operator awareness. When properly installed, activation of electrical power to the system will illuminate the light indicating normal charged condition. System discharge or loss of pressure will immediately extinguish the indicator light. In the event that the indicator light is not lit when power is applied, check for the following conditions:

1. Check pressure indicator gauge for proper range
2. Check fuse and indicator light and replace if defective (lamp replacements

available from factory).
3. Checkforlooseelectricalconnections.
4. Remove and weigh system cylinder as described in Maintenance Section of the

manual. "

You probably need to replace Safe-Fire controller, I am on my 3rd one. Also check the fire extinguisher bottle to make sure it has not discharged, that the solenoid is connected and it works. You may want to have the system checked by a professional, you dont want to "accidentally' discharge the system.

Fire bottle is right in the middle of the green ark so no issues there.
By controller you mean that little switch next to engine start panel that I have in the picture, or actual circuit board?

Something else to check.

I had some work done that involved being at the rear of the engine. In the process the mechanic accidentally disconnected a wire plug connection. Turns out the connection is for the fire suppression system. When unplugged the engine would turn but not start. Plugged it back together and applied some cable ties so that it can't become unplugged by itself.
So check in your engine compartment and trace the wires from the suppression system to make sure it hasn't become unplugged.

great diagnosis -- as usual -- by the board. it's pretty scary that a safety system like a fire extinguisher can completely shut your engine down at an unexpected date and time when you might really need your engine to stay off the rocks.

I agree, simply dangerous!
I couldn't find any info about it anywhere in the manual.
We flipped that override switch by accident and that's started the motor.
Otherwise we would have kept searching for the reason motor not starting forever.
One thing comes to mind:
I am glad Hunter is not building airplanes :)

Although in fairness they do tell about it in the product manual.
I inherited a gene from my father that makes me an avid manual reader. I know, I know it's weird. I've literally read cover to cover every manual for every piece of equipment that came with the boat. I bring them home and re read them over the winters. The manual for the fire protection system in the engine compartment does say that it will shut the engine down, and does tell about the over ride switch.
