Hunter 33 Montreal
Hi: I am thinking of upgrading my H 33 2006. It has vertical battans and shoal keel. I am thinking of the 41AC with deep keel and traditional main. Any thoughts to the sailing characteristics of this configeration? I live on deep fresh water. I want luxury but also want a fast boat that points well. I would put an asymetrical on it as well. Thoughts?

We have an '04 aft cabin 41. This was the first year it came out and would suggest getting a later one. There were several issues that were corrected after the first year of production. That said, the boat sails very well, even with our roller furling main and shoal draft. A deep keel would certainly help it point higher, for the high freeboard in the bow allows it to be pushed. A traditional main with full battens and some roach would make a quick boat a screamer. The asym spinnaker we bought really helps downwind. It's a great boat that's very liveable. Have fun!

Our future upgrade plans are looking at the 41AC, more room for longer cruising.
How do you find the 41 in winds 15knots and up. The 33, gets overpowered at 15 and quite often we're out in winds that border on 15. This past fall we were out with anywhere from 8 - gusts at 17, furl the main and you go nowhere at 8, leave full main and we're on our ear and rounding up at 17.

People we know have an older 41 ( 1998 ) and he says he can take up to 20 knots. Is that the case witht he newer 41 or what do you find.

The older 41, or more accurately the 410, is a totally different boat. The new 41 was designed by Glenn Henderson, and is a quicker boat, but slightly smaller in volume and length. We can keep full canvas up until 15-18 knots, and then reef our rolling furling main first, where the top of the main is equal in height to the head of the jib. We can sail that way until about 23-25 knots, and then reef both sails further. Of course, all this depends on your point of sail. These notes are for more close hauled sailing. When it's blowing on our nose over 25, we'll motor sail more often. We sailed up the Chesapeake last summer with a reefed main and full jib on a beam reach and the wind was about 22-25, and did a steady 7.5+ knots. Keep the boat on it's feet and it will fly.

Yes I do know they are different boats, I've been in both models often, but at the dock or tied up etc., not on the water and aware that GH designed. You might find the discussions with Glenn in the Expert Forums interesting.

Sounds like the newer 41 is similar to the 33 / 36 / 38 handles the wind in a similar fashion. Good for full sail up to 15 knots or so, then roll in the main etc.

Interesting stats on the 410
LOA: 43' 5"
Beam: 13' 10"
LWL: 37' 10"
Maximum Draft: 5'
Displacement: 20200
Ballast: 7400

vs. the 41

LOA: 40'4"
Beam: 13'3"
LWL: 35'6"
Maximum Draft: 5'
Displacement: 19,400lb
Ballast: 6,612lb

Is the newer 41 actually smaller in volume. It is smaller LOA and LWL, but the 410 with the big sugar scoop stern and swept bow takes away from the inside volume and the GH designs with the blunt bow and stern may actually give you more volume?

The 410 is 1,000 lbs heavier on the displ. but also has 1,000 more ballast. May be the reason for carrying full sail with higher winds with more weight in the keel?

The newer GH 41 is beamier ( is that a word?) more forward and carries the beam further aft. The 410 ( left ) has more boat on the stern behind the aft cabin.
