Sails

Curious, do you have to buy a Hunter with stock sails or can you order direct from your own sailmaker? Seems like the stock sails have problems?

Jodi - I keep my Hunter

at Willis and bought it at LI Yacht. Dave is trying to sell me a Beneteau and Gerry the 356. I prefer the 356 myself.

Stock sails

Jeff, this is not just a Hunter issue: all boat mfrs set a price point for what they plan to include for sails on a production boat-I think you would be shocked to see how low that number is! Sailmakers bid on that volume work, and meet the price by cutting material quality, labor hours, design features, etc. Are they OK? sure, but you won't get the most out of your boat, and they won't last as long as a quality sail from a good sailmaker. If you have the choice, and the budget, get the boat without sails and get a suit made to your needs

We keep the boat we have now at Willis in the winter. It is there now. When we get the new Hunter 356, I'm sure we will continue to use Willis for our winter storage.

Small world - hope to meet you guys some day. If you get that 356, would love to hear what you have to say about it after a season. Good luck, Gregg H-290 to be renamed this season - 'Miss Eileen'

Hunter vs Beneteau

Having owned Beneteau's twice, the most recent having been a First 31.6 and having taken delivery of a 356 last June I can say that there is no contest. Hunter's win hands down, better built (they pass the clunk test in ways Beneteau doesn't), superb design and use of space, and value for money winners bigtime. The only sacrifice you'll make is the inconvenience of not being able to run straight downwind due to main-on-spreaders ...

GOOD to Hear

Thanks Niels . That is the kind of feed back I was looking for .Have you had any problems with the 356 ?

I faced same choice

I looked at both the B 360 and H356, and decided on the Hunter. Overall the Hunter is roomier and has a better lay out for my use. I did not do a sea trial with the B, but the Hunter is a dream in close quarters, ie: docking and backing into slips, which is my preferred way to put her in for the night. The sugar scoop transom allows for very easy access from the dock. As far as downwind performance, I had concerns with the B&R rig at first. It's a cosmic coincidence that no matter what direction I intend to sail, I'm either into the wind, and directly a beam. I have yet to worry about going directly downwind. Besides, you'll sail faster if you run off at an angle. We are very happy with our choice. The 356 is just enough boat for my wife and I to be comfortable, and yet I can single hand if needed. Good luck, and give me a jingle when you decide. mark.millham@jaber.af.mil

356 vs 361

Hi Mark, Hope all's well! I'd like to second mark's comments-the 356 hadnles unbelievably well in close quarters, especially while backing. My marina has about 100 sailboats, and I'm the only one who backs in-down a 200 yd channel, through the slipway, and into my slip we usually get a bunch of spectators! She's roomy enough for a crowd, but easy to singlehand, and she performs really well. I also haven't found the b&R to be an issue, you get there faster broad reaching anyway-and we fly an asymetrical chute unless it's really windy. Good Luck, and let us know what you decide!
