Hello
I have to climb the mast to replace my main halyard does anyone have any pictures of it or any advice on how to do it or is as simple as dropping a weighted line and pulling the new halyard through?
it is a 1984 Hunter 34

Hi, so can we assume that the old halyard is missing? Will your halyard exit at the base of the mast or somewhere slightly overhead? A picture of your mast would help.

If your old halyard is still in place you simply stitch/splice the new line to the old and carefully pull the new up through the mast and back out of head blocks.

It's going to be significantly more difficult if you have to climb.

it is missing it broke and was pulled out (long story)
we replaced the jib and spinnaker buy tying the old and new together and pulling them through
I will go up the front of the mast with the jib and spinnaker lines on a bosun chair

Here is what I have.. not much help, I am afraid:


My main halyard exits the base on starboard side out from the base roller.. (picture is of port side) Pull the pin carefully and take out the rollers and spacer .. not going to be easy! Someone with a bent coathanger can tease the messenger line out the base then run the halyard.. then re-install the sheaves

When I replaced my main halyard I had to remove the sheave at the base of the mast to fish out the bike chain I used for weight. If I remember It took some doing to get the chain started over the top sheave.

I have heard of people using pull chain (like you buy at Home Depot and is used for pulling on lights or ceiling fans) as a messenger and using a magnet to pull it out the bottom of the mast. I've never done it but thought it was a clever idea. Good luck!
