My throttle cable froze and eventually snapped Friday night just as I was departing for the weekend. I tried to take apart the pedestal to get to the clamp in side and had a very difficult time taking apart the steering mechanism. The Edson Manual says to drive out the pin on the main shaft. I didn't want to damage it so I didn't hit it too hard but it didn't even budge at all when I struck it. The manual also mentions a groved end of the pin, but I couldn't see any difference between either end. Will any damage be done by hitting this harder or better yet, is there a way to install this cable without taking the steering apart?

The cables on our P42 come made and sealed...

to length with threaded studs on each end to accept a clevis. The clevis should still be good from your old cable. Hunter can tell you the length needed for your boat. WM carries most lengths and sizes and should have one for your boat. I replaced ours without pulling up the pedestal. Check the archives for more detailed instructions. I have written some articles on replacement. Terry

Please keep us informed

I am a new owner of a 1990 33.5, and notice the throttle control is tight. To increase throttle, I have to hold the control near the base because the top of the lever bends (I guess it is hard rubber?). I read in an old post about lubricating the cable. Maybe a little preventive maintenance would help keep my from breaking in the future. Ken Palmer, S/V Water Colors

If the cable is stiff....

Mine started out being stiff, I tried putting oil on it, but it didn't help. I read somewhere the life expectancy is 10 years. My boat is a 92 so I guess I am due. They also recommended changing the Shifter cable at the same time which makes sense. I am still wondering if there is anyway to do it without removing the steering shaft...

Take a look at the Edson site

I was poking around the Internet last night and found the Edson website. They have a section that lists different maintenance instructions, including replacing the cables for the throttle and transmission. Go to http://www.edsonmarine.com. It looks like they also offer a conversion to a single lever throttle/transmission control. What a concept! I love it. Couldn't find prices on the website. so will call them for a quote. I am sure this won't come cheap. Ken Palmer, S/V Watercolors

Just did ours

Hi Mark, I feel your pain! I just had to replace my shifter cable after it snapped off while backing into a slip. I found that I had to remove the pedistal. I could not pull the old cable out, it caught on a metal ring that protectes the steering cables from the control cables.(the Edson print dors not show this) I pulled both ways. The pedistal removal is pretty easy and it gives you access to the place where the cables are anchored, which is about half way down the pedistal. Also the new cable I used was 22' long. Phil

22' sounds long

So you didn't have to take out the steering shaft? You were able to reach it from the bottom of the pedestal? The cable I took out was 14'. Why so long?

No

Hi Mark, I went with 22' because I wanted some extra lengh to make it eaiser to pull. No, I didn't have to take out the steering shaft. I followed the same route as you did at first, I tapped on the pin a few times and I could tell that pin was not going to come out pretty, eventhough Edson makes it sound easy. So I decided to remove the pedestal, and that was the easiest part of the whole job! I just carefully layed it over. You will have to take the tension off of the steering cables. I did that by removing one of the sheaves at the base of the pedestal. When I was done I put the sheave back in place and eased the wire back on where it connects on top of the rudder. I was happy when I was done and looking back, I should have replaced both cables. Phil

Good Idea

I have purchased a 14' but I maybe I will exchange it for something longer. And I will definetely do both cables. Thanks for the help.
