Hunter 280 Water Leak Issues in the Quarter Berth

Ever since I purchased Prometheus I have had leaks into the quarter berth. I have suspected that part of the issue is the aftermarket speakers installed by the POs.

From the inside it looks like this using my flash

From the inside without the flash

Now I may not be the sharpest knife in the drawer, but I think if you see daylight, it can leak water.

I would really like to repair this by removing the speakers and filling the holes. Between the now and the time that happens anyone have a suggestion of a temporary repair until that time comes?

Butyl tape or some caulk should make it water tight until you can remove it and plug the holes…

but how are you going to listen to some tunes?

Sounds like caulk and tape it is leading the survey.

One of the reason I purchased a sailboat is to unplug relax and unwind. Not anti music just think I am looking for a little more peace and quiet.

That said, in today's world, all speakers should be wireless and stowed away when not in use. No need to poke holes in a fiberglass hull to install.

Well, the speakers were probably installed before the popularity blue tooth speakers took off.

An alternative might be to remove the speakers and install inspection ports. This will be an easy and inexpensive way to seal the hull. If there is an inspection port that fits.

Here's an example, there are other sizes.

I like to unplug too, but I like to listen to some music on my sail. Occasionally I silence all the electronics and just listen to the wind and waves, but I come back to some tunes.

I found a Sirius satellite receiver on my boat when I bought it. I plugged it in, and sure enough, it works. No idea who is paying the monthly subscription, but it still works 8 years later. I think early on, there was a lifetime subscription option for Sirius…so maybe a PO bought that.

Either way, nice to have satellite radio with no interference, no lost signals, etc.

Whatever makes you happy…

Cheers,

Greg
