Hunter 28.5 Sank at our marina

Wrong Joe, always closed the seacocks when I was using her! I'l take your million dollars!

and no not trying to sell the salvage rights, trying to find someone who might want her!!!!

and it sank on tuesday, it's been iced up since with few people working, like those who raise boats.

I have owned sailboats for the last 25 years and this is the first time I put the care in someone else's hands!

There may be a misunderstanding here.... I was refering to the original post regarding the boat in Dallas.... not yours(or is it?) .. but in any event, regarding your boat, someone didn't close the seacock for the engine cooling hose and now you're willing to give the boat away. I'd call my insurance agent... then have a long talk with your friend.

If you have a raw water cooled engine and you leave the saecock open any hose on the engine is a risk.......red

We saved this one, one of the guys on our dock was walking to his boat yesterday (Saturday) morning and found this Beneteau 37.6 down to the anchor roller and got 4 electric pumps in it. Called the owner and he brought 2 -3" gasoline pumps out. 40 min. and she was sitting high again. They found the fill line to the a/c cracked/leaking and the sea cock open. The owner was just out Friday and everything was fine then. The 4 electric pumps had already raised it about 6" when I took this picture.

Sorry about your loss.

We have a 28.5. It is our first sailboat. We have been power boaters for years but acquired the sailing bug on vacation in Mexico. Glad that was the only bug we acquired!!
I'm not that far from you .... up north on lake Texoma. Let me know if there is anything I can do to help.

My Hunter is across the lake at Chandler's Landing. There is also a large sailboat there that has sunk in the slip. There are quite a few sailboats on that lake that appear to be abandoned. My marina confiscated about ten of them last year, cleaned them up, and had a very difficult time selling them. I'm not sure if they even sold them all. It is sad what has happened to sailing down here. So many boats that are essentially worthless because of what it would cost to replace lines and sails just to get them sailworthy. Not to mention $1,000-$2,000 per year in slip rental. I wish someone had 'given' me one of these boats before they sank.

I don't plan on using the sink on our H22 - soon as I read a post on this wonderful site about a ball valve deteriorating at the thru-hull drain for the sink I found and closed it. Ounce o' prevention.

Sorry for your loss

This could happen to anyone of us. A hose freezes and brakes, a dead battery for the sump pump or a leaking packing. As they say... But for the grace of God goes I. Hope all goes well for you. Bob

Update, The new owners got her up and she's gone. They had to get a crane on a barg and that took 3 hours. I wanted to take pictures of her but they did it Friday instead of Saturday. They found the top of the engine inlet seacock broken off with the seacock open.

Hunter Sinking

I don't think it was the snow or weight. I have a 32 Watkins in NYC (livaboard). I had to shovel off 3 ft drifts this season and the water line didn't move. Also ice comes around and it is not a problem on sailboats. If he left it unattended (dead battery) for a long time he may have had water above the floor boards before the storm started. I know I had a friend who came back to a inch of water in his cabin. Most boats leak by design through the stuffing box. It could also be a thruhull that froze without closing or winterizing. Needless to say it sounds like the boat was neglected and was most likely the root cause for the sinking.
