Been studying this for a while..need some advice. I need to drop my centerbaord 14-16 inches to replace line and roller. ( want to leave it on the trailer with bunkbaords as a safety) but I am overly cautious as I have never done this before. Safety first.

How can I jack my 23.5 up that high from the trailer safely to access the roller and pin. I'm looking at buying jack stands but apparently they are for support only and not lifting the hull. How do I safely lift?

No marinas in my area can help.

Oh, also some have mentioned doing this in the water while foating it from trailer. Could that be a safe option?...(I do know a certified diver who cleans hulls.)

Thanks ahead!!!!!!

Bob

Welcome to the forum!!

I would take it to a boat yard OR trailer manufacturer that have crane with a sling OR forklifts to lift the boat.

If you have a stout tree, You can park under the tree... lower the nose oof the trailer all the way down... slide a sturdy picnic table under the transom with an old life jacket to pad... then raise the nose of the trailer all the way up using the trailer jack... this will get the nose of the boat about 4’. Take a heavy duty tow strap (or two) under the boat and up into a sturdy branch of the tree. Jack the nose up a bit ... sinch the strap and remove the trailer.

I can post pic later (I’m on my phone now) if you want to try this.

Starting all this stuff with the trailer on top of a pair of car ramps gets you way more height.

This by no means a preferred way of going about it and increases the chances of the boat falling. If it falls with nobody underneath no big deal, I don't want to read about the other eventuality so please be careful.

Although I value @rgranger I would not recommend this to a novice. Experience you do not have lifting on your own, doing that alone, what about a dead tree and the list goes on and on. Suggest a yard with a lift and make sure the line is 7/16 inch only

Is it possible to attach a new line to the old and pull it through without having to drop the centerboard to just change the line? I'm also in the same situation where I don't have access to lift the boat off the trailer, but need to replace the line.

Edit: I assume this can't work because of a stopper knot or an attachment to the centerboard.

I am 99% confident that the procedure for your boat is the same as the one in the attached writeup. Hope this helps.

and Dave is correct about safety ....

and here are some pics of how I've jacked it on a similar sized boat.

Bob, Dave has the right idea. I am facing the same thing and in asking around I have a bus Maintenace facility, an auto repair and a forklift from a small manufacture to talk to. I am sure one of them will come through for me this winter when I tackle center board on my 26, It doesn't have to be a marine to have the equipment to lift it safely.

HECK NO ON THE FORKLIFT AS YOU WILL ONLY HAVE TWO CONTACT POINTS ON THE HULL DAMAGING THE HULL. YOU CAN USE TWO 6 INCH WIDE STRAPS ON THE FORKS BUT IF YOU DO , then tie the straps on the side of the hull both sides so they cannot slip off or you will damage the hull. Look for the strap marks under the rub rail where straps go.

Also use only 7/16 inch line for the centerboard line as 1/2 inch line you will kick yourself. This applies to all hunter water ballast sailboats There are instructions under hunter 26 on boat information by @rgranger

I took my 1998 240 boat to a yard and had it put on lift 2 years ago. As long as Crazy Dave follows this forum, just do what he says. He is the guru.
Did it myself, but it is a tough DIY.

I read through all the posts. I also have to exchange my CB line and I dont have a technician in my area, who could do this, also dont really know where i could have my boat pulled up by a crane etc, or dont want to hang my boat down some tree branches.
I have a 5000lb boatlift for our powerboat and I am planning to lift the sailboat up on this lift about 2 feet above the waterline. With 3 feet water depth this will give me about 5 feet of room underneath the boat. Then I am going to try changing the CB line by standing in the water below the boat. Has anybody tried it this way?

@Frank Jung
First, I do not know the set up of your boat lift as to straps, lengths, width of straps, etc… Therefore, I will not comment.
As for the rest , I will not comment as I find your description of how you would do this is unsafe for me. What if the strap slipped, you do not have time to get out of the way

Sorry, I might have not explained it very well. It is a hydraulic Pier Pleasure boat lift. The boat sits on the bottom bunk on steel lift bars, so no hanging on any straps.
I would be grateful for the following info:
1. How difficult is it to get the CB/housing out of the keel after loosening the bolt.
2. I read somewhere, that the CB weights 110 pounds?
3. How do you get the CB, after line change, back into the keel housing? Can you lift it up by one person, while another person reattaches the bolt to the CB housing?

Thank you very much.

How strong are you? And if you are standing in deep water while doing this... that may add complexity to the equation.
