Hello, I have purchased a 1993 water ballasted Hunter 19. It has a rope next to the mast (right side leading down). I need to know what this is for. I am assuming it has something to do with the dagger board which is hinged. I need to know if this is for keeping the board down or keeping it up. Does gravity keep the board down? Seems unlikely as it is not heavy and is very thin. It pivots down. The rope is not functioning whatever it does. I assumed when I got on the water I would uncleat it and it would trail down but it does not go up or down nor will it pull all the way out so I am perplexed. Also has anyone ever fixed this problem and what's the best way to handle it? I lifted the boat up with a crane and got it where the board was mostly down, then nervously got under it for as long as I dared, but I did not see a rope attachment anywhere. I am pretty confused at this point as to what exactly this rope does, and how to fix this problem...

I believe the rope you are referring to raises and lowers the centerboard as you mention. I have a 93 Hunter 19 and my centerboard is very heavy. All I do to lower the board is pull it out of the clam cleat. Raising it is a bit difficult, but the previous owner attached a second line which makes it easier to raise.

hmmm

Well, when I was raising it, I was swimming under the boat, so being in water probably helped. Im a blacksmith by trade too, so maybe its not so light, I run into situations like that all the time. Mine is a 1993 as well.. water ballasted. So the line keeps the board up? That does make more sense than keeping it down. The rope is stuck however.. won't go down or up, although the board freely moves with gravity. I guess Im fortunate it didnt get stuck on its board when coming off the trailer. Going on the trailer wasnt a problem of course. Ive only taken it out once so far and on a calm day with no wind. The board and rope issue was my only concern. I guess it is sailable as is, but I really need to figure out how to replace that rope. Is this done from inside the cabin somehow?

The expert now will help you

I have not been on the forum for some time but one of you sent this to me to help this sailor as I am the foremost knowledable person on these boats. You have a Hunter 19 water ballast. The line you are referring to is called the cascade line or better yet, the centerboard line. The line is attached to the head of the centerboard and comes up thru a tube and exits if I recall under the mast base starboard line. You report that the board will not go up or down. What appears is the line is jammed in one of two places. I suspect that the line may have come off the roller or sheave just at the mast base and is caught between the sheave and the fiberglass. Check this first as it will cause the board not to go up or down. The board weighs about 90 pounds and will go down by gravity thus the line is stuck. If that is not the case, then it may be stuck in the center board housing. You will have to lift the boat off in order to take that out. To access removal, go inside and you will see a small plate at the mast base. Take it off and you will see a big bolt which will screw out thus letting the centerboard housing out of the bottom of the hull. Do not even think you can do this with the boat on the trailer. You will note that the line may need to be replaced and that is at a point to do so but do run a tracer line which would help. I think your problem is the line is caught under the mast base and check there first. Due to respect for the forum, I do not tell you who or where I am at as I am a dealer trying to respect the dealer network but my involvemnet is great. If you still have problems, ask one of the folks to email you direct with my email and or phone number. If you need to, call Hunter and ask for my number by simply saying you have a problem with your boat and YOu want to speak with "Crazy Dave"

Awesome thanks

I knew I could count on people here. Sounds like a project but nothing too scary... The board is moving freely, although the rope is not, so now I suspect the rope came off the board at the connection point but probably the knot on the board end prevents it from simply pulling all the way out. (Probably very fortunately for me) and it doesnt have enough gravity just being rope to go down without the weight of the board on it when I uncleat it. Sounds like I need to crane it back up, remove the trailer, unbolt the bolt and let the board fall (to padding and not far), then run a new rope, replace the board, put together all the crap I took apart, and recaulk. Thanks, at least now I have a plan... haha

Whe you go to remove the centerboard here is a suggestion. While the boat is still on the trailer remove the bolt attaching the centerboard and the bracket to the boat. Then lift the boat off of the trailer and the centerboard will stay on the trailer and not fall off onto your foot. I reattached mine using the same method way was able to do it with just the lift operator and I. Some anti seize on the bolt helps to keep the thread from galling but you knew that already I am sure.
