Hunter 18.5 Topping Lift

Restoring a 1988 Hunter 18.5. Seems there is no backstay though one is referenced in the owner manual. Can anyone clarify?

Are the spreaders on the mast athwartship (parallel with the beam) or are they swept back?

If the spreaders are swept back, then you have a fractional rig that does not require a back stay. If you have athwartship spreaders then you should definitely have a back day.

Here’s a profile view of a Hunter 26 and you can see it’s rigging. This one has swept back spreaders. Noticed how the spreaders intersect the gunnel aft of the mast. They are holding the mat from folding forward.

Looked at manual and page 8 does not indicate a backstay. I was wrong.
