Last week a strong NW wind blew open my furling jib and shredded the sail. Am thinking of replacing the furling jib with a non furling jib. Anyone have experience with doing that? Thanks DF Cape Cod
Hunter 170 furling Jib problem

A hanked on jib only requires that you take the roller furler off of your forestay.
If you go that route, I recommend a simple down haul system to tame your jib if a stiff breeze pops up. Lead the down haul back to the cockpit then you can tame your jib without going forward. If you keep the sheet tight and drop the jib using the down haul, the jib will flake nicely along a gunwale and sit there until you have time to deal with it.

As you know the original design for the 170 has the forestay integrated into the jib. Same configuration as my 216. I find the furler makes quick work of handling the jib from the centre of the boat, where a hank on will require you to be at the bow. Having some turns of the jib sheets around the furled sail along with a sail tie is good practice but if the wind is strong enough I suppose that might still fail.
I guess you could potentially salvage the forestay from your damaged sail to eliminate the need to buy a new one. Perhaps ask @Dave Groshong here at SBO if he can source a hank on if you decide to go that route, I know he could help you with a new sail of the original design.

For safety and eas of sailing I strongly suggested the furling jib. Everyone concurred with the suggestion

What is the safety of a furling jib? Ive seen the flying scots sail in to the docks and drop them jibs rright away
I am not sure what you are getting at. I will only say the more you learn you gain experience and at some point with experience for example sail up to the dock with sail down or furled in
