Does anyone have advice where and how to mount the display for a hummingbird HR650 depth sounder on an O'Day 25?

I have the same display. The owner drilled a piece of material (starboard) and mounted the display in it. He drilled the cockpit bulkhead with a larger hole and glued the board to it. The back of the display protrudes into the cabin a bit and looks a bit ugly.
The location on the cockpit bulkhead isn't bad. My problem is the display is glued into the mount board which is glued to the gel coat. I need to get it off and reset a new display or maybe go with a different type. Was thinking about one mounted on a swing arm so it stays in the cabin, then swings out for sailing.

I think the problem with installing one is it is made for a thin wall mount application and the bulkhead wall is very thick.
The first two photos are of my boat. The second two photos show a swing mount install, which I may try to copy. I found a double arm mount which would allow it to swing all the way out and in front of the bullkead.

BTW, several members offered solutions for getting rid of the water but it was too late for me, I had already destroyed the display trying to get it out.
Hope this helps.

Matter of preference. This unit came with a puck transducer which the PO epoxied to the inside of the hull just behind the keel. The advantage is that it is small.
I found a photo of the inside. Thinking again I guess the PO used the two thicker pieces to mount the display to take up some of the length.

If you can live with that the HDR 650 works well and is small compared to some.

I may mount it portable unless someone comes up with a different idea.

Thanks and Merry Christmas,

Personally I like the swingarm approach. That way, I can see it from the cockpit or the cabin at night when at anchor. I've only got pictures of the first boat (http://forums.oday.sailboatowners.com/album.php?albumid=2157), but I found a similar setup for the latest boat. If you've already got the replacement, it looks like Ward's setup accomplishes the same thing.

Mark,
I was at my boat today. Of course I forgot to get a good photo.
I did get an idea for you.:D
The bulkead wall is about 2" thick. 1/8" or so fiberglass inside and out with bulsa in between. Locate where you want the display on the outside bulkhead wall. Drill a small hole, 1/8" or so through to the inside. Use this to center a 3" hole saw. Carefully cut the 3" hole through the inside fiberglass and balsa BUT NOT through the outside fiberglass. From the outside use a hole saw to cut the appropriate size hole for the display (2 1/8"?). A trick I read for not chipping gelcoat is to run the hole saw backwards.
This should give you a nice looking mount for the display for the outside. On the inside use the Ritchie Back Cover shown below to cover the back of the display. I found it at Hamilton Marine and Defender Marine for about $30.

I would do it this way if I was starting fresh but po had a rectangular opening cut through the bulkhead and then rounded out the center for the Humminbird display. They glued a larger rectanglue piece to cover the whole thing and hole sawed into that for the display. I am going to remove the cover plate that is glued on and will either patch the whole thing and re-drill or install a new cover plate.
I will use the compass back cover on the inside of the bulkhead to cover the back of the display. The back of my compass is visible so I will use one to cover that also.

Thank you guys! Both good ideas.

Dave, Where did you find the swing arm?

This is how the PO mounted his instruments-

Here's my take on it. I moved the c/b pendant covered the holes with 1/4" starboard and mounted the compass. The depth of the compass was too much with the switch panel in it's original location so I moved it to starboard where the wiring is accessible through the cockpit locker. I mounted my bidata instrument on the port cockpit bulkhead.

Looks like a good solution/postion for the compass. Might try that.
