Do you know how the hull of the 2001 Hunter 320 is built? A Sandwich or a single monolithic block? Many thanks

What is a monolithic block? No sailboat hulls are “carved” out of A solid block of fiberglass…if that is what you are asking.

Layers of fiberglass are laid down, sometimes cored with foam or other materials to create a composite material in a mold.

how the hull of the 2001 Hunter 320 is built?
The same as my H430.

The hull is hand laid fiberglass in a mould. The thickness varies in depth depending on the expected forces, like the bow of the boat.

Few production hulls are cored. The decks are cored and add stiffness to the hull shape when bonded to the hull.

According to Hunter, solid FRP below the waterline, cored above.

Thanks to everyone. I have to install my new GPS / depth sounder. I'm afraid the transducer put inside the boat fail to transmit. Do any of you have it or have you laundered the hull?

Self installed a Garmin GPS sounder that came with a shoot through the hull transducer. I located ours next to the shaft strut where there was solid FRP. I tested it first by making a small dam that I filled with water then placed the transducer in the water to perform a test and it worked.

Using the same dam that I made out of duct tape, I filled it with a clear sealant making sure there were no air bubbles, then pressed the transducer into the sealant. Once it set up, did another test and it worked great. That was in 2005 and the system still works to this day.

Just need to make sure the FRP location has no air pockets that will interfere with the signal. I now have the original depth meter that came with the boat with the transducer located forward of the keel and with the other back by the shaft strut, it gives me bow and stern depths.

This is how your Hunter is/was built….
Unbelievable. How did you get those pictures ?

I'd be worried that you could be "taken out" by the manufacturer for having such detailed pictures in your possession :yikes:. Ties to Chinese intelligence by any chance  ?

Your 320 hull definitely has a solid FRP core and will take a shoot thru the hull depth sounder.

All you need to do is a little hunting around and you'll find an acceptable location. My Forum Search is not working right now but search under my name and search "depth transducer" and you'll find how to locate a depth transducer location using a plastic, re-sealable baggie filled with water before doing any work.

However, I'm pretty sure it was the method of attachment you used which failed to transmit the signal. Follow @Terry Cox 's instructions in post #8 and results are guaranteed. Don't get sucked into any hair-brained ideas like placing the transducer in a can of oil or antifreeze which slops alll over the place while under way. These ideas are definitely the products of troubled minds.

Do any of you have it or have you laundered the hull?
Yes, installed a thru the hull transducer in a friend's H-410 a number of years ago and it agrees with my "hole in the hull" transducer at depths up to 100 feet or more.

Ralph,
When my wife and I bought our 2000 340, 22 years ago, this month. We asked Hunter if they could send us, a (meaning 1) picture of our boat being built. Well these are what I got back from Ed Breeden, back then. Really is phenomenal that we got all these shots. Here are a few more that the system wouldn’t allow me to send the first time. We’re limited to 10 only. But I got a couple more. Well as far as being taken out by some Ninjas, let them take their best shot.

After about 6 years we were at the Newport International Boat Show here in Newport, RI and we were waiting to get on a boat and standing right behind me was Ed speaking with someone else. I turned around, saw his name tag and Finally got to meet the man who really does have ALL the answers. There was nothing you couldn’t ask him and get an answer to.
So that’s my story and I’m sticking to it.
Enjoy the pictures. They are real eye openers to the process.

So that's how you got 'em. I know I've Googled hunter construction over the years and seen nothing.

I talked to Ed Breeden years ago about some technical issue or other on my 1999 H-310 and I know what you mean. There was nothing you could ask about production on which he wasn't a walking encyclopedia. And loved to talk about it. A call to him was never under a good half hour. I was glued to every word he sad.

Thanks again for the pictures, and for the newest ones. If you've got any more, please pass them along. I've saved them all in order as a .pdf and filed away.

Ralph,
You are so right about Ed and he always made sure you understood what he was telling you before he hung up the phone.
That’s all the pictures I have of “How to Build A Hunter”. Glad you are enjoying them. And they can help some others too.
I have to date myself, I guess, these photos are in our boat photo album. Real Photographs! That’s what he sent us. In the mail , imagine that! These fancy camera things we all have now weren’t invented yet. Oh God, did I just say that. Anyways….
Any other pictures I have are in my profile on this site. But they are of upgrades and repairs.

All my pics of delivery are printed photos. Two identical 1999 H-310 arrived on one flatbed trailer on July 30, 1998. Stripped to the bare bones.

Early release of 1999 model in 1998. Big deal.

Ouch. Does that take me back a ways  .

This is NOT the best way to find out the Hand laid Fiberglass thickness but...

hullcutawayMag.jpg

That showed uniformed thickness about 5 feet back from Bow. The Bow is much thicker.
Jim...

PS: ≈ 5/8 inch thick.

Right, not the best way to determine the thickness.

What was the purpose of the cutout and what is the rough material immediately behind the hull ? No offence, but I'm afraid it looks a bit like old construction shiplap  but I'm sure it's not .

Repairs after a hurricane, OUCH :wahwah: !

I can mkake out the end grain balsa now that you point it out. I wasn't serious about the shiplap.
