On a Catalina 30 1979 the tag inside the cockpit on the transom the text is very hard to read, the paperwork has:

Is the hull number 1249 ?

Here's a question I been wanting to ask for some time. My 1978 Catalina the 30 plate number says 980... Now with that said, what should the correct number on the mainsail be?
In other words should the mainsail number coincide with the plate number?

Your boat you can put the leading zeros if you want, but why stop at two. I don't have preceding zeros on the Fantasea 5693.

When taking my captain's course years ago, The advice was to have a secret place on your boat where the hull number was placed. It was to be your secret place & the numbers should be painted or permanently adhered for if removed, the evidence would show.
I have my hull# publically displayed behind my stairs. In addition, I have my secret place for identification if my boat is stolen.
I would tell you guys where this is located but then, "I would be forced to have to kill you."

Can you tell me how you adhered the number so that if it was removed, there'd be evidence...or would you have to kill me if you told me? Then again, it might be worth it...for one brief moment I'd at least have had the satisfaction of knowing!

Fear not my friend, I can tell you without having to kill you.
Maybe just shoot you in the leg but, I bought some plastic lettering. I found a non-conspicuous spot, mixed clear epoxy and made a thick base for attaching the letters. I took masking tape & stuck the letters to it. This way you don't have to place them on the epoxy one at a time. Allow it to set & just pull off the tape. I then added a few coats of epoxy to really seal the letters.
So, which leg, left or right?

LOL...take out the left one, that way I can still at least drive without too much trouble

Interesting discussion regarding secret hull number locations. I've never considered that a 30'+ sailboat could be stolen... Haven't ever heard that.
And I forgot to mention - we sailors are such a kind and friendly bunch. None of us would ever consider stealing another's boat. Now, power boaters - whoa - that's another story. They're an unruly sorta bunch. They aren't even good enough to be able to say "power boat" as a compound word. That's left to us more sophisticated "sailboat"ers!

You'd be surprised of the numbers of sailboats that are stolen especially in Florida. Powerboats are higher for theft but, anything worth stealing can be stolen.
I have a 100T Masters with Aux Sail & Towing endorsements so, over the years I run various sail, fishing & dive/spear charters. I not only operate my sailboat but, various powerboats also. I see both good & bad sail & power idiots doing the best to make it the worst for us. It's not the type of propulsion that's the problem but, the idiots that operate them.
As for spelling etiquette, that differs from person to person I thunk.........(ha ha)
