How to remove 30 yr. old tape.

I just did something like this on my boat last weekend, tried a bunch of things to get rid of the glue residue but what worked best was Quick Start (ether) on a rag. Finished the job with some rubbing compound applied with a cloth and you can’t tell there was ever anything there.

See if there's a supplier in the area who supplies paint to "the trade" of auto body shops. They carry the 3M woodgrain/stripe remover. This is the only thing I found that converts the goo so it is easily lifted off. With solvents alone, you just end up pushing the goo around while only removing a little at a time.

Wheel works great on adhesive residue but still need to finish with spray and the scraper. So, 3 steps. Heat and peel off blue easily, wheel on the adhesive and scraper and spray and rag

Don't hire the pro - fill a bucket with water and add 1/4 cup liquid laundry detergent (like Tide). Mark the hull where you want to put the stripe, dip a section of the stripe in the bucket and apply to the hull. While the stripe is wet, you can easily move it around until it is where you want it. Repeat until done. When it dries, the stripe will be adhered to the hull where you want it - easy peasy. I have been doing this for over 30 years on my boats, works like a charm and gives perfect results.
I do the same, but you don’t need that much soap or water. I use about 4 drops of dish soap in a small hand spray bottle, and wet the surface before applying.
I don't have the new stripes yet,I thought they would be peel off the sticky back? Is that not the norm? Or can that get wet also?
Yes - the soapy water lets you slide the stripe before you press it down, and when you have it positioned perfectly you use a plastic squeegee (or a credit card) to squeeze out the water. When it dries and the vinyl sets up it doesn't interfere with adhesion.

Hiring an install makes sense.
But having time you can do the stick on vinyl stripe. Using the spray and a helper keeping the stripe straight to get the tape to your identified line is easier than you imagine.

Well, count me in as a 3m wheel fan. Heating and peeling the upper stripe proved problematic, tape kept breaking up in tiny pieces so I just skipped peeling went right to the wheel. One thing I noticed, I don't know how it got out of round but now with drill chattering in my hands it is tougher work! Should finish removal Sunday am, then wipe down with acetone rag.

The best stripe / lettering remover I've ever found is CrystalTek Vinyl-Off. Well worth the price.
Are you replacing the stripe with the identical one still sold by Precision Boat Works? I've contemplated doing that on my P23, but can't imagine getting the new stripe on straight. Any advice?

put down a line of masking tape the full length of the new stripe following the edge of the shadow line where the old stripe was removed. Apply the new by gun-sighting down the tape line. Its really pretty easy even without the soapy water. With lettering, I would definitely use the soapy water technique.
