I am trying to reassemble a single speed Lewmar 8 winch. This does not have any bearings. I am most confused about the white plastic widget used to keep the winch from sliding off - it is like a locking wedge. I know where it goes on the winch inside base, but how do you properly engage it or lock it into the outer hub (the part that actually accepts the lines? It seems to fit completly inside the inside base - which makes it's useless. I hope this is clear, Thanks!! Mark

Mark, the Lewmar website has online directions for their line of winches. The white plastic widget retains the center spindle (the part that has the handle socket at the top). The drum is then put over the spindle and held on by the circlip that fits just under the top of the spindle. Check out the site at http://en.lewmar.com/support/index.asp Click on the link "How To Service Your Ocean Winch. Page 30 details how to service your winch.

We have a ten Lewmar winches onboard, all ealy 80's vintage, and have called Lewmar customer service for parts. Since Lewmar doesn't support the winches any longer, they didn't have any parts available. Lewmar did fax me the schematics for all the winches which was very helpful in the reassembly of two speed #43 and three speed #44 winches.
