I replaced the salon sole with new teak and holly plywood and want to try and match the color of the new sole with the existing sole in the fore and aft section in my 1985 Hunter 34. I believe the teak was oiled many years before it was varnished and has an almoset cherry wood shade to it. What would be the best way to match it ? Oil the new wood and then varnish ? Stain it close to the shade of the existing and varnish or polyurethane it ? I have already sealed the bottom and edges of the new sole with three coats of epoxy to prevent any future problems with water damage. Any experience or suggestions would be very much appreciated.

I Did The Reverse

..trying to match the sole. I took it all out and stripped everything and started over. Good luck, RD

That would be nice

Rick that would be nice to be able to strip everything but I cant devote that much time into stripping all the other woods that match the existing sole ( bulkheads, cabinets, hanging lockers) that the previous owners oiled and then varnished. Getting the salon close to those I think is my best solution with the time and energy I can devote.

Understandable, Brent

..but I didn't strip everything, just the sole. OK, here's another suggestion that worked for me.. mostly. I had to bleach out a damaged piece. The result was a piece that was a lot lighter. I purchased some wood stains. A lighter and darker. By mixing them, I was able to come close to the original. It wasn't 100 percent in my eye, but people I pointed it out to thought the match looked just fine. Rick D.
