how to make safety line covers?

wondering what people are using to make those niffty safety line covers? Not sure what they are called. Usually white, look like they are soft maybe with a canvas sleeve ? I like'm

Do you mean the lifelines between the stanchions? I covered mine with three strand laid line that I opened and wrapped around the steel wire core.

yes that's it, now that's a neat idea..........

After I laid the rope open and wrapped it around the wire core i hitched over it with # 80 seine twine and worked turksheads on the stanchion tops.

The usual method is to use those foam " noodle" thingies that kids play in the pool with. Covered in Sunbrella with Velcro along the length and a pull cord at each end.

that would do it, the one's I've seen are to thick, but a thinner one would be perfect.....

Ideally you should be able to wrap your fingers completely around the safety grab. It should be solid enough to not crush under load and provide enough gripping surface that your hand won't slip and large enough as to not place point loading on your hand. Get 3 or 4 feet of 1/2 inch and 5/8 inch 3 strand and try it on the lifelines.

If you don't want to go as big as a noodle, you can use pipe insulation with the same type of cover that Sam Salter talked about. I made some for my last boat, and used some hose on the inside of the pipe insulation for extra rigidity. It's small enough to still be able to wrap your hand all the way around.

How do you accomodate a 5/8 inch hole in the insulation to the 1/4 inch wire rope?

Looks really nice, but makes it pretty hard to check the condition of the life lines though. But damn, it looks great.

That's where the hose comes in. The ones I made I used a thick walled plastic tubing. There was a little wiggle room, but not a lot.
