Ok.
Call me Racist.

Having read both articles and accepting them as printed.

The free New York/Bronx rowing activity is open to all and free.

The Vermont $7000 free program to people with non- white skin color is Racist. It is virtue signaling “look at Us. George Floyd’s death caused us to look at our program and set up this free program “.

I’m not saying it is bad thing to do. Some kids get to go to sailing camp and perhaps they may follow through with sailing in the future. But to promote the program on CBS is to say. “Hey look at us white folk and what we are doing.”

I’m sorry. That just feels wrong on so many levels.

I guess growing up during the Martin Luther King era in a military family where color was in our Crayola crayons, having studied his life and reflecting on his “I have a dream” speech
I have a dream that my four little children will one day live in a nation where they will not be judged by the color of their skin but by the content of their character.

When we can, we should encourage all persons to join and experience the joy of sailing. Such is the pay it forward promise that may keep our beloved activity alive for future sailors.

Always amazing when a white guy starts quoting MLK to make a point about people of color and how they should just be happy with what they have. Nope, these under privledged kids deserve nothing, just let them sit and have their poor lives. Nice sentiment. You have no idea what any of these kids have experienced and never will. Is it sad that it took the death of George Floyd to get this program a clue on what goes on on the other side. Yes. I know full well the impact of his death had as I watched the city I grew up in burn. Neighborhoods where I lived, have friends and family still living, and a daughter who was neck deep in it all, helping people every day and night and raising money.

So maybe you should have just stepped back and kept your crayon comments to yourself and not politicized the living hell out a really good program that is helping kids and exposing them to the sport we all love and are passionate about. Yes, you are racist. Have a nice day.

I am struggling with how to respond to @jssailem's post on this thread. I think it is best to tell my story (in an abbreviated form).

First, the intent of the Burlington Community Sailing program is to provide an opportunity for kids who would otherwise not be be included to experience sailing. That is an admirable goal, but begs the question, why wouldn't be included? The answer is complicated, the short story is people of color over generations have learned there are places they don't belong. The sailing program recognized this and it was mentioned in the piece that yacht clubs were for whites only. It wasn't only people of color who were excluded, Jews were also excluded. The message was clear, you don't belong here and that message was passed on for generations.

So how does that message get passed on? Which brings me to my story, the story of a 70 year old very white guy.

Boarding a bus as a 7 year old I told my mother I wanted to sit in the back of the bus because it was more fun there. With a stern look she grabbed my arm and said "David, we sit here" pulling me to the vacant seats in the front of the bus. Once seated she pointed to a sign at the front of the bus, "Coloreds to the rear." This was Greenville, SC 63 years ago. It was part of the indoctrination that some people don't belong in some places.

A few months later I found myself in a different place far away, a place where this 8 year old white kid was in the minority of the minority. I was not a Pacific Islander, I was not Asian, I was not a white kid with generations of ancestors on the island, and I was not a white military brat. There were few kids who were like me. Over the next six years I learned where I was welcomed and where I wasn't. The number of places I wasn't welcomed far surpassed the number of places to which I was welcomed. I learned.

Many years later I worked in an urban school district and repeatedly saw kids of color given the message, "you don't belong in this school" yet alone any thing like a yacht club. Parents knew and understood, they taught their kids how to deal with this exclusionary message, don't go where you are not wanted.

The Burlington Community Sailing program should be commended for their efforts to undo the messages of the past. To provide a welcome to kids of color to a sport we all love. They should be commended for their efforts to undo the exclusionary messages of our predecessors. They should be commended for easing the entry requirements to our passion for those who would have been excluded.

Three hundred years of oppression and exclusion are not undone by a speech before the Lincoln Monument or passage of a few laws. It comes from the hard work of those who are willing to recognize the problem and work to change attitudes and remove barriers. That is what is happening in Burlington, that is work that should be commended.

That the work is hard and needs to be done is what I began to learn as a 7 year old. And it is the work I have done in my professional life. John, the comments you made negate the work I have done for the past 45 years. As one of a similar age, you might remember the slogan that said something like "If you are not part of the solution, you are part of the problem."

I agree that this is awesome. I want to see my kids get into sailing because I think it can bring them so much fun. For the same reason I want the sport to be enjoyed by as many in the future as possible. We are all here because we love spending time on the water, or just messing about in boats. Anything to bring that kind of fun to new audiences is time well spent in my book.

While I give everyone props for keeping this civil, it's right up to (and a little over) the political line. We're going to let it stand for now but I highly recommend steering the topic back to sailing, yacht clubs, and expanding the sport. More posts about racism will cause the thread to be locked or posts deleted. Thank you.

We just had two van loads of kids from RTB out racing on Sunday. Eleven boats on the line in spinnaker and non-spinnaker divisions, over four and three-mile courses, respectively. They were quick to notice that two of our eleven skippers were immigrants. After the race everyone enjoyed a BBQ at the club.

As with so much else, the US seems to be backsliding in yachting. I have no doubt that it will soon be a sport/pass time for the wealthy only, just as it was at the turn of the 20th century.

Kind of feel the subject was a bit of click bait.

I watched a soccer game where the ref allowed things to go a little over the line. It only encouraged more in appropriate sportsmanship. By admitting this thread is over the line and not acting will encourage more infractions. Just sayin.

Here where I work we also do our best to reach out to and include underprivileged kids and adults in our programs! The reason that stands out the most here in Galveston is that there is an appalling amount of local low-income families who never make efforts or get the chance to even see the water, much less go sailing or fish. Getting kids involved in sailing/fishing programs doesn't only help develop character, but also opens doors to potential careers in the future. We love it!

I assure you there were no "click bait" intentions. No agenda except sharing a good, positive story.

Aren't we all just getting a little over-sensitive with this anti-political "just sailing" repression? How are we ever supposed to get along if we can't express our views openly. Are we supposed to just stew in our own little segregated corners when it comes to discussing topical issues? I think the path to understanding & unity is MORE discussion, not repression. For the most part, I think we're pretty good in this group policing bad behavior on our own without the robot. I'll even admit to bad behavior on my own part! That's just my opinion.

But back to sailing programs ... these are good. I will suggest that minority involvement in these typically "white" activities won't necessarily be successful simply by introduction and exposure made easy. In our area, we have a ski resort funded and dedicated for this same purpose, and it isn't necessarily a success ... yet. It may be in the future, but there are more than just the exclusionary hurdles to clear.

Too often the conversation degenerates and becomes ugly. This is sometimes referred to as Godwin's law.

Our town also has a Community Sailing program. $400 per household provides access to one of the program's Ideal 18's any day of the week. They don't provide sailing lessons, however - you would have to hire an instructor or get a friend to teach you privately.

If you want to discuss politics, go to twitter. This board is about fixing boats, not someone's opinion on fixing society.
