I sew the butt ends of a messenger line, like Joe said, and wrap masking tape for a smooth transition. Using a tumble washer works well but the top loading not so much. The bucket method is useful for any lines you can’t remove. We have had some success with the dock hose at our summer marina since it has good pressure and volume. Good luck keeping them soft.

I really liked the reeving eye. It made a very easy transition through the blocks at top and bottom. I tied my moussing line with a large loop and bowline so that there was no knot near the eye when rolling over the sheaves.
All of the lines came out very nice and soft with a bit of fabric softener. The exposed bits were a little bit faded but not bad. I did an end-for-end swap on all of them to change the exposure.
The one line that was badly herniated only had problems on the last 20' so it is used for the spare halyard which mostly is used for a pole topping lift so the problem areas will not get to the masthead.
