How to choose a winch?

My O'day 25 has Barient 10P winches for the jib sheets. Time to replace them as one has a broken spring that has jammed the spindle.

I am trying to figure out what to replace them with. The on line selection guides seem to have me doubling the size for my size genoa and jib.
Jib is 159 sq ft. I also have 135 genny.

I found the 10P specs and have found 3 winches that appear to be comparable.

Costs Model Drum Base P/R Bolts Size
Barient 10P 2 5/8 4 3/8 7.6 4 1/4

$252.00 lewmar #8 2 9/16 4 1/4 7.9 5 1/4
$165.00 Anderson #10 2 1/4 3 5/8 9.5 4 1/4
$314.00 Harken B8CCA 2 11/16 4 1/2 7.5 4 5/16
$214.00 Harken B6CCA 2 3/8 3 9/16 8.4 6 1/4

When we had an Ericson 27, we replaced the old winches with 16's rather than anything smaller. Bigger is always better. The only limiting consideration is the footprint.

Don's right. From the WM Advisor on winches:

The West Advisor

Selecting Sailing Winches

Winch manufacturers publish sizing charts online and in catalogs that cross-reference winch size by sail area and type of application, so you can find the recommended size for a mainsheet, spinnaker halyard or other common use.

Before replacing your Barient winches, I would try repairing/replacing the springs. I had the same problem with some Barient 10s I had on my old C&C. I could not get the drum to come up and off the spindle due to the broken spring parts wedged in there. Here is what I did. Get a thin piece of plywood and seat if next to the winch base. Using a common pry bar, hook it under the base and gently pry up using the plywood to protect the coaming. Move around the base doing this a few times. The drum will eventually come up and off. Simple to replace the springs (and pawls) if need be. I found this size winch a good choice for a 25 footer. If you do need to replace the winches, I would recommend getting self-tailing winches as they are a solo sailors best friend...

Pawls, springs and getting drum off are no problem. The problem is with the retaining spring that holds the center shaft in the base unit. It is held in place by a C shaped spring with "arms" that are in the open slot I circled in the photo. You squeeze the spring closed and that allows you to pull the shaft up and out.
That opening was filled with rust when I pulled the drum off and only a very small piece of spring was left on one side so I can't squeeze it shut to pull out the shaft.
Plus the shaft is frozen in place, which is why I am trying to work on it.

A quick question about self tailing winches. Do you lock the line around the top of the winch, which eliminates needing any kind of cleat to hold the bitter end of the sheet?

I found barient/barlow pawl springs at west marine. Don't tell anyone, but the lewmar springs will fit also... although they look different, they still work.

Well, I took Don and Stu's advice, read the WM Adviser and the BoatUS article on selecting winches. I then went to the manufacturers sites and used their selection guides to list sizes for ST and non ST winches. What I did not realize with STs was they held the bitter end of sheet eliminating the need for the sheet to be cleated off. Since I still have horn cleats for the jib sheets, I liked that feature. I also remembered I have photos of a 26 O'day I took last year when it was stored next to my boat. He raved about his #12 STs, saying if I did one upgrade it should be the winches. I laughed it off then, because of the cost.

Then I asked a long time sailor friend and he said not to think about making it easy for me but making it easy for the Admiral.

So, made my decision and just placed my order for two Andersen #12ST full stainless winches which Andersen recommended for my size boat and jib. The cost definitely made me choke and blew away my boat budget for this year but I don't need to eat every day.

Some price matching got the price to within $5 of the Lewmar 15 Chrome STs, which were the lowest cost in the size range recommended. That also helped.

Thanks everyone.

I like your thinking! Sounds like you made a good decision and your conscience can rest easy. (I looked at the picture of your winch and was about to say that they are a good candidate for replacement) Good luck with the installation!

Ward... you did good. If you're going to change.. get what you really want, because a winch is essentially a lifetime commitment. Wow, two Andersons. I am envious.
