If you want to sail alone it is simpler to just sneak away and do it. This way your friends and family are only perturbed at you for not taking them out instead of pissed at you for being such a d***head

Saw a funny cartoon once. Show two guys rowing a roman galley, think of Ben Hur, and one says to the other, "This may sound unpatriotic, but I hope they capture some more of us.":D

Fully expect that your soulmate (who's sailed with you for the last 8 years) can perform (without coaching) the basic steps of tacking. Tell her in a most non-descript voice that she has 4 wraps on the winch and it is about to overwrap itself in 15 knots of wind. Mutter quietly but just loud enough so she hears it "now you've f@*&*d it up". Watch as the situation goes from bad to worse and she gets help from son #2 and finally recovers. Marvel as a now new favorite nautical terms is born when she turns and stoically states, "I un-f@*&*d it"!!!!
