Ok so I am looking at the packing gland and wondering if I am getting enough of a drip from there. If the shaft is not moving should there be any drip? I know it should be 2-3 drips a min, but is that all the time? THanks for the insight!

I like no dripping when the shaft is not turning. A drip or 2 a minute is plenty when running. If you use the GORE teflon packing you can get to way less than that and still be OK. The key is that the shaft / stuffing box do not get hot. If the box is cool to just barely warm to the touch after you have been motoring for a while, you have enough drips.

Drip

Yanmar guy told me it was an old wives tale about the drip. Have you ever seen a shaft of a sailboat scored from overly dry turning? Not any more likely than finding a dead cat in a tree. That's not to say one should overly tigthen the big brass nut, but enough to stop the drip. I could be wrong.

Drips

Mine doesn't drip sitting at the dock. I ran my motor down the lake last weekend about 10 miles. When I got back to the dock I went down below and felt my packing gland. There wasn't much water under it, maybe a puddle 2 inches around. I felt the gland and I could touch it and it was kinda luke warm. Almost felt like the heat was coming down from the engine. The more I moved up towards the transmission the warmer it got but never more then I could hold on to. Anyone have any idea what is too warm. I have no idea when the packing was last changed in the boat. Jason

drip

When I put my first boat in for the first time water came in while just sitting in the water. The cutlass bearing had been changed by the yard so I guess that was to blame. I tightened the nut quite tight and got no dripping. After about 40 hours of motoring I now get a drop or 2 every couple of min.
