I purchased a sailboat made in Jan 1976, and researching back, it appears to have no name.

How many of you sailors are floating about on unnamed boats?

What is the proper christening procedure for a:

36 years old,

13,286 days old,

318,865 hours old,

19,131,900 minutes old,

1,147,914,055 seconds old Virgin?

I just purchased my 1974 30' Irwin about 2 months ago and have yet to name her. On another note, we have yet to sail her either. Thru busy schedules and necessary repairs and updates the opportunity hasn't been there. Not to mention my wife and I can't agree on a name (I like Enavigo, Cast Away, and Sealution). we'll see.

I got our previously unnamed 1988 Mac 26D on Nov 21/11. We (I) came up with a name for it on Mothers day. (The day we launched it. No sailing just motoring.)

Last summer, after just the third time out in our new (old '85), having run onto the rocks and then grounding on the mud flats and then the engine wouldn't restart, my first mate remarked "Well, I guess we're learning by Trial and Error". Ergo, the boat was named.

any respectable boat needs a name..... and it takes a lot of thought to get it right, but it shows that a person cares about it to invest that kind of time, effort and thought.... .

My present boat (dragonfly) had no name on the transom when I purchased her, however the daughter of the man who used to own her told me that he called her wind dancer. I didn't like the name and since he did not take the time to put the name on the boat, I did not consider it an official name....so after I repainted the boat I asked my girls to start thinking of a new name... and I told them that if they paid attention, the boat would tell us her name... (kind of adds to the mystery and fun of it all). Well on the maiden voyage, we anchored in a cove for a swim and while floating about a massive cloud of dragonflys flew over us from shore and alighted on my hat, shoulders, likewise with the girls and all over the boat. And the girls both exclaimed that the boat should be named dragonfly... it was kind of eery and cool at the same time... so there you go. I was trapped with the name... and now I think it was the correct name after all. :)

I kind of like Disco Volante ( I think it is the corect spelling), it is Italian for Flying saucer, and there is an Alfa Romeo show car with the same name. My boat is Lord Willing II. I bet you are aware, if the Lord is not willing, your sailboat is not going anywhere!

And if I were to go with the bug theory presented by Rgranger, my first boat would have been named "nasty ass swarm of bugs that landed on my boat and got into everything!" My wife said Honey, what is that it sounds like a swarm of bees! In my infinate wisdom, I assured her that it was not a swarm of bees. And I was correct, the swarm of bugs that took over our boat were not bees!

Naming and Christening a boat is a personal matter. The traditional way is name her and then christen. When we christened Freedom my wife said, "God bless this boat and all who sail in her." and then broke a bottle of champagne over the bow. They make special breakaway bottles that break easily. Wrap the bottle in netting to keep glass from flying. Legend has it that the vikings "christened" their boat by breaking the back of a slave across the bow as an offering to Oden the Moon Godess. I haven't found any volunteers yet. My wife found a plaque which is mounted in our cabin. It says, "Bless us of Lord, Thy sea is so big and my boat is so Small."
Wasn't the yacht that belonged to the evil guy in Thunderball name Disco Volante?

i love the name of my ketch--solitary bird, after the writings of don juan de mateus, the 5 points of solitary bird.
Solitary Bird has points of five
1) It keeps its beak to the sky
2) It has no definite colour
3) It flys to the highest point
4) It suffers for no company, not even that of its own kind
5) It knows no boundries
Don Juan Mateus

what i like even best--no one else has a solitary bird....or is one..LOL

Why would you presume that a 36 year old is a virgin?

This is our first year with a slip at the local marina,as we sat in the cockpit looking around at all the larger sailboats i noted how our boat looks like a toy boat in comparison,my 15 year old daughter who loves the french language used google translator and toy boat translates "Bateau Jouet"
we like it so we are leaning toward that name for our 1981 Hunter 22

Bateau Jouet is a lovely name. There is size, and there is reputation. My Clipper Marine sits on a dock with over a million dollars of boats in 20 slips. My boat is the largest boat on the dock but still could have that name! lol

Our Capri 22 came with the name "Princess". It had no special appeal to us. I removed the letters and remaining adhesive. Put on the letters for "Ophelia". The name is unique enough, clear to understand on the radio, has a classical literature history and is a popular song by the Band.

Oh yes, for those who are interested in ceremonies, we did share some wine and cheese with friends on one of the first outings. We did somewhere mention the boat's new name.

If the boat came without a name, it might still be without a name. My car has no name and I spent much more to purchase and maintain the car...

If you don't name it then it isn't yours. My car is "the old grey mare" 'cause she ain't what she used to be.

Ross, I name lots of stuff.

For instance, our autopilot is named 'George', for the old saying "Let George do it". And our car GPS is named "Georgette". However I have a friend who named his car GPS "Bibs" - short for Bitch in the Box.

Recalculating.........

My GPS for my car is named Ferdi.... Short for Ferdinand (as in Magellan). My hand held GPS is named T-gellan... "T" is Cajun short for Petite. My first car was named Charline the Bondo Queen. I could keep going but... I'll spare you.
