With the end of the sailing season arriving in some parts of the country, how many days have you or will you be out on your boat this year? Is most of that daysailing, weekend cruises, or longer trips? How long was your longest trip and where did you go? Was most of your sailing done on your own, singlehanding, with your spouse or SO, or with sailing friends? Has it been a good sailing year for you? (Quiz contributed by Gary Wyngarden)

Sailing Days

I made a New Years resolution to sail 25 days this year. So far I'm up to 27, and should get in 6-7 more before years end. Longest trip was 9 days, and that was also the ost mileage. 9 days were offshore in larger boats (over 40') than our Hunter 290. The offshore trips were towards my CPM certification and those were with sailing friends and others striking for similar certification. All trips in the 290 were with my S.O. and a few friends and family. It has been an excellent sailing year, and the good news around here...we can sail all winter too. Dan Jonas (S/V Feije)

Not Enough!

The boat was pulled yesterday :-( . We were first in the water April 22nd. Our sailing season is about six months. We were out nearly every weekkend and some extended trips of upto five days. Sailing western Lake Erie is great. We sailed to three of the many islands, Put-In-Bay, Kelleys, and Pelee. We also sailed across to Leamington on the Canadain shore. It is fun to sail to a another country. However much sailing we do, it is never enough and promise to sail more next year.

Great year!!!

This is the first year in about 10 years I've had a boat to sail. I managed to get out about 6-8 times for weekend sailing with new found friends. Can't wait to get back in the water next year in my O'Day 15! Kris

Twenty-four log entries.

Which is waaay too few. And one of those we only got to the end of the pier before the engine quit. If we are untied and floating it goes in the log! Lake Erie islands are a blast. We spent one overnight on Middle Bass, about 22 miles from marina. Did not make it to Canada this year. Mostly we daysail for three to five hours. We came out early(9/19) to take advantage of warm weather for needed boat work.

As much as we possibly can

We are Lake Erie sailors and spent 3 separate weeks of vacation sailing and 3 long week-ends with our fellow LESSHSA (Lake Erie South Shore Hunter Sailing Association)sailors. We sail out of LaSalle, Michigan on the west shore of Lake Erie between Monroe, MI and Toledo, OH. Made 3 trips to Leamington, Canada, stopped twice at Pelee and Middle Bass Islands, with stops at Kelley's, Huron, and Put-in-Bay also. Enjoyed seeing many of the tall ships in mid-July that were making stops at many of the Lake Erie island. We try to get out for day sails as often as weather permits. It was a great summer this year, but that boat was pulled on Saturday so the season is over and now we are planning and looking forward to next year. Tom

Day sailing...

Hi all, Here in Boston the sailing season is drawing to an end. Hauled out yesterday. I launched a little late this year, in early June. That provided about a 4 1/2 month season. But is was a great season. Nothing broke, everything went very smooth, and the weather was very cooperative on days out. However, I delayed launching and lost a few sailing days due to poor weather early in the season. I mostly daysail around Boston Harbor with experienced sailing friends, family members, neighbors and sometimes single handed. Also crew on friends boats, and sometimes crew in races. Had only one overnight, with my young son -- his first overnight on a boat. Family priorities generally rule out two sailing days in a row -- I try to get out one day a week. This year I sailed about 14 times, which is a lot for me. Except for the fact that it is over, I am very pleased with the 2001 sailing season. Fair winds... Tom

Not enough

I got out on the boat only about 10 times this summer; I hope to sneak one more sail in before putting the boat on the hard. All trips were day sails; the one overnighter I had planned turned into a long day sail because of bad weather predicted for the next day. This is my second year with the boat, and I had hoped to do at least one overnighter on the water, and one at the dock with the kids. Neither worked out. However, I did finally get to cruise over to the Thimble Islands, anchor, swim and relax. More big plans for next year. Hopefully, my kids will be more interested then, and my wife will finally take those lessons and be comfortable.

Make the best of a short season

By late December, we will be able to walk on the water that we anchor in during the summer!!! 5 1/2 months is a short season so we try th squeeze the most sailing in as possible. May seems a long way off for the start of next season. Launch day was April 28th and we have been fortunate not to miss a weekend all season as well as vacation time. We will have logged 75 days on board by the time we are hauled out later this week. Still not enough sailing! Until next year.............. Merrill Ambition 33.5

Great Year

First sail was March 29th. I logged 42 trips since then and plan to get in a bunch more. The boat will stay in all winter this year so if the winter is mild I plan to sail a lot. If it isn't mild I will still go out some. Most of my trips were daysailing, but we did several overnight trips.

How many day's

Had a fantastic summer, Sail on Williston Lake, and there is no problem going out for a couple weeks without seeing the same thing twice.

Got out a lot but I want a LOT MORE

Our season started April 15th when our new 2001 Hunter 290 got splashed and ends with this upcomming weekend as our boat gets hauled next week. Our longest sail was went I moved the boat from Bay Shore LI out into the Atlantic, and up the Hudson River to Haverstraw Marina. We got out almost every weekend and even some evening sails during the week. Plus, now having a larger boat we got to spend several weekends sleeping overnight on her. But even with all that I had wanted to do at least a long weekend trip up the River and to sleep overnight on the hook, but neither of those happend. For next year I am attempting to plan a trip to Block Island. Hopefully that will come off.

A year for working on the boat.

We purchased a a Catalina 34 (Hull 21)last year. Moved it from Bay City, MI to Muskegon, MI via water. As with any new possession, we have been working to make it ours. Nothing big but to our tastes. Have, therefore, only taken one long weekend trip. We have off season work to do and hope we will be able to take an extended trip on Lake Michigan in 2002. Have a great winter and see you on the bounding blue in the spring. David Alger s/v "Emotional Rescue"

Good Season

It was a great season we made it to the boat almost every weekend this season even if it was only to sail out, anchor, and have a meal (the kids called it a floating picnic) on board. We will pull the boat in about three weeks and even with family obligations we hope to get one more day of sailing in before she goes ashore for the winter. Most of our sailing this year was day sailing. Our goal is to take at least one extended trip next season.

a "newby" here...

I just got my 26X two weeks ago. This past weekend I took my first trip. It was an overnight on SF Bay. We dropped anchor off Sausalito and just enjoyed the spectacular views and perfect weather. Yesterday we cruised all around, under the GG and Bay bridges. Along SF down to Pac Bell Park, around Angel Island, etc. It's late in the season but being CA I'm hopeful that there will be alot of weekends like this past one, weatherwise. I hope to do the Sacramento Delta soon. I have yet to go "under sail" as I have no experience sailing. I figure when I invite someone who knows how to sail, I'll be a bit more brave about unfurling the sails. I'm fortunate to to live on the water and my boat is docked in my backyard. This allows me to take the boat out for even an hour.

Not enough, but more ahead

We moved aboard our Hunter 45 in May and have been working thru our list getting ready to leave Louisiana December 1 for the Florida Keys, then the Bahamas and places south. We plan to spend next year's hurricane season in the Trinidad area.

Better - much better!

After a major refitting of my '79 V222, which I bought new, I became active again this summer after several years in which I did no sailing. "Suzique" is in a slip on Lake Neely Henry in Northeast Alabama, only a half hour from my home, and much more accessible for sudden impulses than other locations I've used in the past. The lake is not ideal for sailing, but certainly better than no sailing at all. In June, I took "Suz" to St. George Island near Apalachicola, FL, and sailed every day with my kids and grandkids - great! I now get out once or twice a week, and with the mild climate of this area, will be able to find suitable days throughout the rest of the year. "Suz" and I both feel like kids, again - refreshed and revitalized.

It Ain't Over Yet

Down here we just hit the prime weather for sailing. We are usually able to sail in every month of the year, January and August being the least pleasurable.

A Very Short Season

My wife and I sail a Hunter 336 which we launch new in '97 on Lake Oahe in central South Dakota. In early May we were busy preparing her for launch when my wife fell from a 6' stepladder and shattered her knee. Launch was delayed till 13July when she found the courage to go below. The boat was pulled 7Sep because of an expectant grandchild. In the interim we managed 19 days aboard and sailed further up river than any of the other sailors on the dock. In summary, we made the most of our truncated season. PS: Wife walks with a sever limp today; but she is walking!

As many as I could

After a disasterous first year in 2000, have had a great year in 2001. After taking a sailing class through the club where I moore, I've been out almost every good day since July 18 (day the boat hit the water) and have really had a great time. Only drag is that the rest of my family is not too entused, so I wind up single-handing msot of the time. But have really become an addict. Just short trips - 1-2 hours mostly. Dave Conley
