How do you install PSS Shaft Seal? Do you have to remove the shaft completely or just slide it aft a little? Is a trought-hull required for water cooling? Thanks, Rip

PSS install

Dear Rip: To install a PSS you must remove the propeller shaft coupling from its end. You would then slide the shaft aft a few inches, remove the old stuffing box leaving the stern tube bare. You will then slide the PSS down the shaft re-couple the shaft to the transmission and finish the remainder of the PSS installation and adjustments. An additional water source would be needed if the unit was our high speed unit. This however are mainly used in faster powerboats. Our web site www.pyiinc.com carry our PSS installation sheets if you would like to review a more in-depth listing. Hope this helps, Sincerely, Kevin L. Woody

PSS Shaft Seal Installation

I just installed the PSS seal system in my '85 Cat30. After I removed the shaft from the coupling, it was a piece of cake. Unfortunately, the shaft was siezed into the coupling (as well as the set bolts), and it was necessary to cut the shaft. This whole process was required in order to replace the cutlass bearing, which you might want to consider if you are going to pull the shaft anyway. Since the shaft was out, Idecided to also replace the flax shaft seal with the PSS. Installation was quite simple. The bellows section with the graphite collar slides on with pelnty of clearance. The stainless seal with the O-rings required some dish washing liquid on the shaft to facilitate insertion of the shaft. Follow the directions included with the kit and there should be no problem.

Couple more things

Here are a couple more things: 1. Before starting the engine, "burp" the shaft seal; that is, fill the air cavity with water. 2. After a few years you may notice some leaking which gradually gets worse. What this means is the pleated portion of the seal has lost it's elasticity. This is normal and the fix is very easy. Just loosen the coller and slide it aft a centimeter or so. PYI could give you better handle on the approximate distance - just something to remember for the future.
