Well I knew this day would come, I want a bigger boat. I was lucky and bought right for my first boat. What is the best way for an owner to sell a 30 footer for 20g or so. Not the most expensive boat, the marina wants 10%, okay with me but what is the route to take for fastest results. thanks for advice.

Carl, we need to know the make and year

here are some question to consider. 1. does the marina list boats on Yacht world. If not then where? 2. This web site does a good job of sellin boats for a fraction of the cost of a broker or marina. 3. If you have an older boat it is going to sit of the market for a while unless it is in really great shape.

selling your boat

I sold 3 boats last year on line. I live in Fl and sold my ODay 30 on line to a boy from the midwest who came and got it. and then I sold a 25 footer in a barn in Illinois on line and the buyer went there and picked it up there and then a sunfish on line to a guy from South Carolina who came here and got it. . The free sites I used were sailboatlistings.com, then the site from owners groups like ODayowners.com (they have one of these for nearly every boat) then there is the sailingtexas list. All are free and let you post pictures. All my boats sold close to the asking price. All sold in a few months. The Oday in mid 20's, the 25 trailer sailer under 5K and the sunfish for $500. Price it right, make it look good. Lots of people look at these free sites. My advice is do not waste your time with a broker for a low priced boat they want to sell expensive boats. Terry

What in the ...

hmmm, world, is the marina sticking their thumb in the pie for? Are they going to show it for you , open it up for people to look at, take people for rides? None of my past (3) or present marinas have/had any claims like that. Is this common in some areas?

It depends on your style. Some people use a realtor to sell their house and some sell themselves and some us a "sell yourself" method that is in between. I sold my boat through a broker because I didn't want the hassle of dealing with potential buyers, showing the baot, etc. 10% is what they charged and I found the service well worth it.

I bought a boat and sold a boat right here!

I was happy with both and timing worked great! Actually I bought my second O'Day 25, and then sold my first O'Day 25. r.w.landau

Word of mouth can work well

My boat already had a reputation as a great boat. Sailed fast, won races, babied by owner and looked like new. It was a 1976 Pearson 28-1. People actually sought me out when they found out it was for sale. Sold it to a racing friend for the asking price($3,500 more than what I paid 3 years before) within a week of listing it. I had buyer's and seller's remorse all in the same week.:) I probably should have asked more but it is nice to see a friend enjoying it and it is only a few moorings away. Join a sailing or yacht club. Show people your boat. Everyone is looking to move up. Some have smaller boats than yours. Email all your sailing friends and ask them to email all their sailing friends. I think buyers are more likely to buy locally especially if the owner can give them a ride and let them sail it before requiring an offer and deposit. Tim R.

Carl, how did you BUY the sailboat?

I hate to be a too critical, but you bought the boat, right? What do you need to know about selling it? There are numerous websites (this one being great), there are brokers (yes, they take a piece of the pie), there's ebay... What worked when you bought it? Did you use a broker? Did you see a for sale sign? See it on the internet? Stumble upon it while driving down the highway? How fast do you want to sell it? How stuck are you on the price? How did you arrive at the price? What are you including? Heck, what are you selling? Guess we need a lot more information in order to give you good advice. Dave s/v Wind Dreamer II

Craig's List

Write up a good marketing spiel and add pictures. List it on Craig's List (it's free) in your area. I listed my Lancer 27PS to see how many bites I'd get. Had to take it off the next day because I was getting too many calls. I wasn't ready to sell the boat. I have the text I used to list my boat. It is on my boat's website. You can take a look-see if you like. Good luck!

Brian, Every tihing is for sale at the right

price! Hey if someoneone offered the right price, I would be buying a new boat! I love sailing! I love boats! I love being on the water! That does have it's...requirements! I would not give up the water, the sailing, but the boat is a means to achieve the rest. If you have had that much interest, put an unreasonable price on it and start over. r.w.landau

Brian, why did you only have a 9.9

with a power sailer? You could up to a 70 HP on that baby and go what, 13 MPH? The M-26X can go faster with the 50HP.
