Not bad

Gary, Good job on the Quiz! We don't need to reinforce what we know but learn more about what we don't know. Thanks for mixing it up. r.w.landau

Government Statistics Quiz

I must agree with the general consensus here. I was expecting a quiz geared toward honing my knowledge of boating safety, not on government statistics. "There are lies, damned lies and statistics," Mark Twain.

RE: Those figures don't tell it all.

Sure, at firt glance it appears that "sail boaters are having more than double the reportable accidents (per capita) of those heathen, unwashed, drunken, careless, untrained, thoughtless stink potters." However, it's also possible that all 332 sailing vessels with reported accidents were also members of the 777 at anchor or tied to the dock/mooring at the time of the accident. Happy Holidays!

sorry

So, what's new? Regardless of the Coast Guard's admittedly faulty statistics there is a single truism running throughout... If you drink and fall off the boat without a PFD on you will likely die. I imagine this is true if you are still tied to the dock or out in a gale.

Sluggish is slow -- sail gives one time to think

I think that the quiz questions were correctly poised...When viewing a scene of a happening there are two immediate observations a) PFD's are floating on the surface; b) the person first retrieved has his fly open and without a PFD; the second has a blood alcohol level not seen in a bottle; the third was thrown out of the boat at high speed turn.... only (b) fits a sailor.....after having a few beers before graveyard watch.... Sorry Gary, usually love the quiz, but this was more of a trivia contest. I agree with the consensus opinion that a safety quiz would have been more interesting. Actually, what I learned is that alcohol is not as much a problem as everyone thinks it is. Now, how useful is that?

Hey, Guys....

Did you know that 78% of all statistics are made up?

stupid quiz

What is the point of all those stats? The questions did nothing to judge my safe boating skills.

thanks for the support

Now I don't feel ashamed. I agree with most of you and would probably not feel safe on a boat, sail or power, with anyone that did real well on this "quiz". Brian p.s. I only got three right

Unless you're in the insurance biz...

...the quiz was hardly relevant. I agree with the others. This was no test of skills or seamanship. Cheers, Bob
