On the bright side...

we are only 2% of the boat population, and within that, a 5% chance of 'reportable accidents'. So ummm, well, its a small number anyway.

Those figures don't tell it all.

That means that sail boaters are having more than double the reportable accidents (per capita) of those heathen, unwashed, drunken, careless, untrained, thoughtless stink potters. ;) There could be several reasons for this high number: 1. Being "cheap", as all sail boaters are known to be, we report accidents at a higher rate because we are hoping to collect on the insurance. 2. Power boaters are better trained than sail boaters. Not likely. 3. Sail boaters know they probably couldn't make a clean getaway from the scene traveling at the breakneck speed of 6 knots so they report accidents at a higher rate. 4. When the weather gets too rough for the power boaters, most sail boaters believe it is time to get out on the water. FYI I have owned both power and sail boats. In 2002 only 77 of the 4062 reported injuries were on sail boats. That is less than 1.9%. In 2002 only 11 of the 750 fatalities were on a sail boat. That is less than 1.5%. I looked at other years and saw similar statistics. I believe it is fair to conclude that: 1. Sail boat accidents involve a significiently lower rate of injury or death than power boat accidents. 2. Sail boaters do, indeed report accidents at a higher rate than the average boater. Perhaps because sail boaters know and follow the laws at a higher rate than the average boater. To quote the USCG report: "The Recreational Boat Casulty Reporting System does not include every accident involving a recreational vessel. Some accidents are not reported because of ignorance of the law and difficulty in enforcing the law. We believe that only a small fraction of all nonfatal boating accidents occurrring in The United States are reported ...Overall, the more serious the accident, the more frequent the reporting."

Interesting, but not my favorite quiz

As soon as I saw the questions, I realized this wasn't a test of my skills or seamanship; if you hadn't seen the survey results before, you were just guessing. I prefer the quizzes that either test my knowledge of substantive sailing skills or those that start a discussion relating to our opinions. Having said that, those are some eye-opening statistics. If the purpose of the quiz was to educate and illuminate, then well done.

I agree with Mike's comments and add that statistics generally tell the tale the teller wants told. s/v The Lord Nelson

quiz poorly titled

This was a quiz about knowlege of boating statistics and not about safety. Sailors and power boaters who are aware not so much about statistics but about true safety issues are not concerned with USCG stats, but with the practices and procedures that make a vessel, its crew and passengers safe. Navigation skills, proper equipment, knowlege of equipment location, weather awareness and experience are just a few items that contribute to a sefe vessel. I have looked at many of these USCG stats but I didn't do well on the quiz. There is a movement afoot within the USCG to make a federal law concerning manditory PFD use. Using flawed reporting and skewed statistics they are making a case for legislation forcing all of us to wear pfds on board.

Sailing Safty Quiz...???

I took the quiz. I am no safer now that I took it then before I took it...questions like..Number 3, "3) The approximate percentage of boating fatalities caused by drowning is"....how many red cars on the Ohio Turnpike, reported by the OSP, had accidents with fatalities caused by a car crash....all the people that drowned, ...drowned. But drowning did not cause the drowning..???? Did the car carsh cause the fatality on the road..or was it the cause of the crash..???...confused by the questions in Ohio....maybe its just me. Hand me another beer.

Pass a case of beer.

I'm with the rest of you guys. Gary, I was expecting a quiz relating to my knowledge of proper safety procedures, not a CG data sheet. I'd never seen the sheet so I flunked the quiz miserably.

If I had taken this test before studying the Coast Guard's report, I too would have done miserably. Yet I think I am a very safe boater. What's the purpose here? As Mike from Branford suggested, it is "to educate and illuminate". I personally found some of the stats to be pretty startling. However, if we have an understanding of what goes wrong and why, we have a better chance of avoiding problems that might put us, our crews and our boats in jeopardy. Hope you all have a nice holiday and a SAFE New Year! Gary Wyngarden S/V Wanderlust H37.5
