An observation about this quiz... and others

A quick observation about this quiz and the others that have run before: Generally speaking, the lower the scores the more complaints about the quiz. When scores skew higher the quiz is praised. Just a little food for thought. :) Everyone have great holiday! P.S. My flame suit is on, have at it. ;D

The answer to No. 2 could not be "D", All of the Above. The question asked: Which one of these ... Answer D was not one but three. I think it was 7 and 8 that made sailboaters look pretty bad. 7 said that sailboats make up only 2% of registered boaters but 8 said that sailboats make up 5% of reported accidents. Another explanation is that sailboaters are just more conscientious about reporting.

I learned something from the quiz.

Therefore it was a good quiz. I think most of us had no direct knowledge of the answers. I got half of the questions right because of logical deduction based on boating experience. For the ones I got wrong I made what were logical conclusions and hopeful guesses (in retrospect I noted that my logic was quite faulty on some). I didn't feel good about missing half the questions, on the otherhand there was no reasonable way I could have known some of the answers. In the end I learned a number of facts and through input from Trevor and some contributors to this discussion I learned how well these facts are to be trusted (qualified) ie. reporting of accidents is hit and miss. I think statistics are quite valuable if they are properly qualified and fully reported. The liars are the people that take objective statistics, ignore some facts and qualifications that don't support their arguments and then use them for their own benefit - kind of like being quoted out of context.

Well, Malcolm said it all.

Phil, I'm still :). You're right but only if we ignore a graphic tabulation of quiz subject matter,,,,,

So, 10 Questions to sober float

I feel that two questions would be valid. 1. Does a PFD improve your chances of surviving a man overboard? 2. Does drinking increase the probability of an accident or casualty? 8 more questions on the same issue are defined as double jeopardy in test design, ie the person misses more than one question on the same lack of knowledge of the first miss. Boring quiz and a shoddy hidden advertisement to support the push for mandatory PFDs! Shame on you.

And another explanation, Serenity

registered powerboats include every bassboat, jonboat, unused trailerbailer in driveways and even a sailboat's inflatable dinghy with power (in Virginia at least). So their numbers might be out of proportion to active boater incidents; Pennsylvania has more registered boats than Maryland, so thats a clue.
