This may be a dumb question. What is the device circled in the picture attached? I have searched and found nothing. My best guess is, it's to purge the air out of the water heater line.

Exactly What it is .....................

................. particularly when you are re-filling the system after an antifreeze change.

Thanks for the replys. I have seen many installations that don't have it.

Joker, well this is timely. we are just installing the HW tank on our Bene with a Yanmar and saw this post from a while back. This bleeder thing looks interesting and makes sense. Any idea if it is an off the shelf item?

It was factory installed when I got the boat. Maybe someone else can say where it can be purchased.

It looks like an air valve on a tire. You press the stem to let the air out. I would assume some coolent will also spray out.

As an alternative:

I came across this http://www.yourcustomcar.com/coolant-bleeder-valve.html. You would put a "T" in the coolant hose and intall the bleeder.

Then you can run some tubing down to a pail to catch the over flow, rather than it spraying around the engine compartment.

Just an idea.

Good luck
