I replaced the hot side of my exhaust pipe and removed the old (asbestos?)insulation. Can I just go to Home Depot and purchase fiberglass (pipe wrap) insulation to replace it?

not the correct wrap

no,you will need to purchase the wrap that is designed for "hot exhaust" The home depot stuff will not shield 900+ degrees of hot exhaust temp.Go to a marine store or other supplier and get the correct exhaust wrap.

Try a NAPA parts store

Ask them for a PSS catalog. Or try www.jegs.com . The insulation for houses simply won't work. You can also get fire blankets from a welding supply store that would work fine.

Jim: I'm not sure what engine you have but let's assume it is a Universal or formally Kubota. To any Universal owners with older engines that are following this thread - listen up. The Universal engine normally comes with a unit called a exhaust riser. This is a devise that bolts on to the exhaust manifold. Water from the heat exchanger is injected into the riser and cools the exhaust before it enters the aqua lift. For some reason, boat manufactures elected to eliminate this item and go with a "black pipe" setup that is wrapped with insulation. Unfortunately, the black pipe start to rust the second you install it plus it generates heat. This is one of the reasons that manufactures are going back to the exhaust riser setup. This piece costs about $150. With the exhaust riser, you can grip the exhast hose and it is very cool. That is not possable with the black pipe setup. So Jim, if you have a Universal, forget the black pipe and insulation and get the exhaust riser.

Mates: I'm trying to post a picture of the exhaust riser but I'm not sure this is going to work.
