My boat, a 1986 Pearson P36-2 came with an old Hood 914 (?) continual line furling system. Not really to pleased with it though after cleaning it up it works well and I have been able to reef the sail with it. Anyway, Hood has a replacement head for the unit...it is the Hood 900 series. The cost when you exchange is half the retail cost or about $800+/-. My wife and I right now are coastal cruisers....a lot of day sailing, like to go fast but not into racing, hate to fight with a system and do want to furling/reef unit (I guess they all are these days?). I would hate to get the replacement and have it not perform well. If that is the case I would rather wait and pay more for a unit that will last and be bullet proof and leave one less thing to worry about. Does anybody have the unit and what is your experiences with it. Any suggestions Again thanks as always Greg

The new Harken cruising furlers are reasonably priced and far superior to the Hood, I just love mine. They sell them here.

Line Drive replacement

I made the change that you are considering, but with the smaller 800 series line drive. The replacement/upgrade was very price friendly. My feeling was that if everything else about the existing unit was working well (had to replace the top bearing, a $20.00 part) why go through the expense of a whole new furling unit. There are better units I could have upgraded to, as pointed out by Sammy, but the Hood unit worked very well. So, I installed the replacement drive unit and am very pleased with it. One word of caution. When installing the drive unit the angle of the furling line as it exits the drum is critical. I had to relocate my fairlead blocks three times before I got it exactly right. However I believe that this is true of most furling units. Another consideration is the installation process. I was able to, with help from friends, accomplish this myself without unstepping the mast. If you want further details: 856-629-5408 Good Luck

My boat

also came with a continuous line Hood furler. My boat is also a 1986. While the system worked well as a furler, I never really trusted it as a reefer, and Hood tells you it really isn't a reefing system. My furler worked ok with a 120 per cent genoa, but when I moved up to a 150, I was never sure of its reefing ability -- not a good situation and not one you want to find out the hard way when the wind is howling and you really need to roll up some headsail but not all of it. While I also looked at upgrading my system with the Hood upgrade, I instead decided to replace the whole system with a Furlex 200. The basis of my decision was that while this cost about 3x more than the Hood upgrade, I would probably have to replace the upper swivel at some point and I still would have a 20+yr old foil. Nothing lasts forever, particularly on a boat. Since I planned to keep my boat a long time, I knew that replacing the entire system was inevitable and so I bit the bullet and replaced it sooner rather than later. It was a good decision for me. If I thought I might sell my boat in 5 yrs or less, I probably would have just done the upgrade.

See my Comments ...

...about the DL vs. the SL reefing unit at the beginning of this day's posts and entitled "SL Reefing". I switched to the SL from the DL ten years ago and very happy. Slippage cannot happen with a SL that is tied-off properly.

I also plan

on having the boat for a long time...and actually never thought of the foil part of the furling system. Hate to get the upgraded head and then have the rest of the system break in a few years and have to start all over again. This is why I ask these questions...... Thanks guys! Greg

Happy with the Hood Upgrade program !!!

I too had a 25 year old hood system that had severed us well. In 2005 I took advantage of the Hood upgrade program and stepped up one model (same 1/2 price deal) and replaced the original Hood headsail furling system on Sea Dragon and added a new furling system to the staysail... Both at half price... Each was a complete system with new drums and foils. While we have only had the new unit for one season we are very pleased with the choice. Note: I did have to have the luff tape replaced (smaller on the new Hood) on a brand new sail... Bummer... But I would have had to do that with any other brand.
