Has anyone had any problem of their Hood Furler slipping when partially furled? I have a 1990 C30 that has the single line furling system When the wind blows about 15 knots or more my furled sail will come open fully. I have to head up and refurl

Hood 810 LD

I'm guessing that when you say "single line" you're referring to the "looped" line system. This is the Hood 810 LD (The LD stands for Line Drive). Mine slips unless I keep tension on the line at all times. The previous owner installed a cleat near the line so I can cleat it off if I need to reef. Truth is, I've been told that this was designed as a furling system, not a reefing system. You can upgrade to a drum type set up for around $500. Check the related link below for details. same here

I have an '88 with the same furler and have the same problem. I'm gonna try Allen's idea and cleat it down to see if that helps.

To Jim

Jim, The trick is to grab BOTH sides of the looped line & make sure there is tension on both sides of the spool. This set up works for winds up to about 25 knots +, but it does slip from time to time. Good luck! Allen

slipping

I have the looped system and have not had a problem with it. I have a cleat on the starboard side just below and behind the winch (thought it was standard but maybe not) I reef teh sail to the point I want it then pull both lines tight and cleat. Have sailed in gusts to 45 knots with it half furled without a problem. Sail it routinely with a reef at 20/25 knots. David

Ditto

I have an '88 TR and have the same problem with this system. I cleat off the line to prevent this from happening, as the others have suggested.

Use a cleat

I also have an 88 Hood. I use a cleat to tie it down and it works fine. If you step the mast in the Winter check the plastic bushing at the top of the furling tube. Mine broke over Memorial weekend and forced me to replace tube, bushing and forestay. 3 week repair with no sailing....bad news.

Cleat it tight

I also have the loop line furling system and don't like it much. I use a cleat and find that it will hold in a heavy blow but only if you put a lot of tension on it. This sometimes makes it difficult for inexperienced crew.
