Did you by any chance try to contact a Honda dealer to ask them?
it might be a common issue that they are aware and have a solution!
Just a thought

The motor seems to need a nap for at least 30 minutes and less than 90. That's the problem.
Just enough time for a relaxing beer !
Or a good nap for yourself.

I suppose the question is, do I just have to live with this?
............ Test ........ Test:beer:....

Do you have an air duster can available?
Assuming the ignition is far enough away from the carb/choke etc.
Using it to cool specific components may speed diagnosis. I fixed an atv that had a random heat related CDI module problem.
Blasted it with cold and was able to confirm the issue quicker.

Being Saturday afternoon and all, the Missus and I went to town (marina) to clean up. Tied up to the dock, took the lid off the motor. Came back all clean and shiny and the motor started right up on the first pull.

I'm thinking the problem is heat related. Next week I"ll try contacting Honda to see if they are aware of any similar issues on other 5hps.

Thanks for all the suggestions.

After some more research I discovered Honda OB's have thermostats. If they stick the engine gets too hot and starting and performance problems ensue. Removed the thermostat, ran it until it was hot and waited 20 minutes. It started. More trial runs will be necessary to be confident.

Good on you. That may well have been my issue, too. I had the carb steam cleaned, replaced the gas filter and gas hoses, but never thought about or found out the thermostat causing issues.

I may have spoken too soon.

Just went out and tried to start it, a hard no, deeply comatose.

Also check the fuel tank cap (if internal tank) . It's a known issue on the small 2.5 hp model.

It doesn't breath and the fuel draw causes a vacuum that stops fuel flow.

Easy to check, run with cap loose...
