Honda Generator and my zinc

Help: I have a 1996 Hunter 336 with a Freedom 20 Inverter and bought a Honda 2000kW portable generator. It cost less than $1,000 as several of you have told us here, and it works great. Hot water within about 20 minutes without starting the engine, top off those batteries, everything I hoped for. Now I can install that A/C without worrying about the $7,000 generator. Only, I have a problem. When I plug the generator into my shore power plug I get a faint glow in the reverse polarity light on the electric panel. We plugged into my neighbor’s Out Island 41 and the glow was not there. It is not the generator. I have something wired incorrectly or not properly grounded on my boat. (There is no glow when I am plugged into shore power.) I have never had a problem with my zinc and it was gone last time I had a guy dive on my boat. He has been replacing the zinc once every two years or so, and that one lasted a few months. Also, my knot paddle, which was in the water only while I was sailing and at anchor, is more corroded that ever before and I always take it out when I leave the boat to sit for a while (did not happen at the dock). It is not any one of these things, but the combination that bothers me. I am concerned about using the generator until I understand the problem. Any suggestions? Thanks in advance, Rodney S/V Avanti H336

Polarity

I have a Hunter 356 with the Freedom 20 and a Honda 2000i as you do. I also have the same issue with the reverse polarity light glowing when the generator is plugged into the shore power outlet. I agree that the problem must be the way Hunter wires the boat and not the generator but have yet to come upon an answer or solution to sove the problem. Hopefully someone here will have an answer. Regarding the issue with your zincs, I have not had experienced any problem to date.

Maybe Normal?

You might try an archive search. I recall that the condition you describe is pretty normal, altho I don't get the reverse polarity indicator when I run mine. The zinc issue isn't likely related. Check for neighboring boats with cords in the water. Do you have any new neighbors? Rick D.
