I'm staying home!

Unless it's blowing enough to keep the traffic level down, I'm staying home. Volume was WAY up on Carlyle Lake this past weekend, and it will increase through the week and weekend. Saturday, no less than half a dozen times I had to radically alter course to avoid powerboats at high speed. In three cases, the "driver" was not even looking forward or around but turned toward friends and engaged in conversation. And just to keep things fair, once I had to get out of the way of a C27 port tack with no one on deck. The lake will clear up nicely after the holiday weekend. I'd love to day sail ... but think I'll stay home and enjoy some non-boating friends. Tom Monroe Carlyle Lake

Our First Overnight

I'm am planning our first overnight on our new boat over the holiday weekend. I've rented a guest slip at a local marina and will watch the fireworks from the comfort of our boat. I've talked my 7 year-old daughter to join me for the weekend but am still working on my wife. She's having a hard time seeing the benifits of sleeping on a 26' boat when she can enjoy the comforts of her own bed 30 miles away. Either way it's going to be a great weekend on the boat. We'll probably take the boat out the the Channel Islands on Saturday for a daysail and back to the marina for our second night aboard. Good sailing and a safe weekend to all.

probably not an overnight

I think mosquitos will chase us back to shore eventually. Also, there might be more people aboard than would be comfortable on an overnight. (22ft only goes so far) We'll be anchored in the Patuxent to watch the solomons Island fireworks. But we'll be on the OPPOSITE side of the river, where hopefully there will be fewer crowds, and fewer drunkenly operated boats. Also, that location is only about 5 minutes from my slip. It should be a good time.

Heads up!

We will be sailing to a beautiful marina on Elliot Bay in Seattle to view the wonderful fireworks display that will be directly overhead. Typically it rains in Seattle on July 4th, however the forecast calls only for clouds. For us this is a nostalic trip... we purchased our 1987 31' Hunter, Windancer, 6 years ago and this same event to the same marina was our first trip aboard her.

4th of July will be...

In Bristol, RI! Then on to Newport, Block Island, Mystic, Stonnington, back to Newport, and lastly, home to Warwick. This is my summer vacation. Happy 4th to all! Cheers, Bob Lazybones

We're Overnighting

We'll be sailing during the day from our home port in St Helens on up the Columbia to sail around between Portland and Vancouver, have some dinner, watch the fireworks from the river, then find an anchorage overnight (probably Government Island or thereabouts). Should be fun. It was a real blast last year. Since the Ft Vancouver fireworks are launched from a barge in the middle of the river, there's no better view of them than from a boat. - Jim

First weekend trip this year

I was supposed to take a friend and his wife and two girls out to watch fireworks friday, but it was cancelled. I had planned to sail down to St. Michaels to join another Columbia Sailboat owner for rafting up and some activities saturday, spending the night raftedup, and returning home on sunday. Now I will leave friday morning, sail part way there, and maybe meet with the other Columbia owner on friday. We will do the St. Michaels thing on saturday and sunday. My crew wioll have to be back for work on Monday or I might delay leaving until Monday morning.

Tied up at the dock!

Having ventured out on previous holiday week ends and survived it, I'm sitting this one out and staying tied up at the marina where it's reasonably safe. There are too many cigarette type boats that like to blast up and down the lake at full speed, rental power boats and ski doos being operated by persons with questionable skills in various stages of intoxication around my sailing area. Enforcement is out and does their best to keep things under control but they can't due to the number that show up on holiday weekends. Labor Day and July,4 seem to be the worst.

Damn the PWCs

Too damn many PWCs and power boaters out there so I'm staying home in the airconditioning and dreaming of October when the summer idiots are off the water. It's too bad but a fact of life this weekend.

The Comfort of the Beach

Too crowded . will just hit the beach & look at fireworks from a wide variety of directions. No point trying to compete with the testoserone powered boats with motors larger than the intellect of the respective captains.

Cedar Point

Tonight (Monday) we are planning meals for a sailing weekend. Our son and daughter-in-law are arriving Wednesday night from Chicago. We will sail and anchor out amoung the beautiful islands of Western Lake Erie. Friday night we plan on anchoring off Cedar Point to watch the fireworks. Cedar Point has more roller coasters than any other park in the world. This year they opened the "Top Thrill Dragster". It is 400 feet high and goes over 100 MPH. We will all have fun. P.S. If you are wondering, I own stock!

I'm staying off the water...again

Too many powerboats and PWCs, and most seem to have little regard for anyone else on the water. As a general rule, I stay off the water on holiday weekends. Peter H23 "Raven"

No PWC or speedboats keeping me from having fun

We are heading up to the lake on Thursday night for a nice long hot weekend on the water. We will relax and sail each day. Double fireworks for us. One lake nearby has them on Friday and then on Saturday they will shoot them off on our lake on barges right in front of our club. I can guarantee you this...no PWC or power boats will keep me from having fun this weekend. Not going to let a bunch of high schoolers on wave runners ruin my weekend. Hope everyone has a great weekend and happy sailing!

Anchored, KFC and fireworks!

A family tradition for over 20 years is to get a bucket of KFC, sail the afternoon away on Galveston Bay, then come into Clear Lake and anchor and chow down on cold fried chicken and then sit back and enjoy the fireworks shows. Most years we can see 6-8 shows (the land around Clear Lake is about as flat as calm water!!). Hope everyone stays safe!!!

Practice race for an all women's race

Patriots Day race is the day after the 4th so our crew of women will be using it to practice for the "Race for the Roses" women's race at the end of July. Poor hubby gets the boat back in August.

Hooray for the red white and blue

How great it is to have a boat load of kids and grandkids to celebrate our great country's birthday. Fireworks Friday night. Saturday - racing, sailing lessons for the grandkids on a laser and sunfish, a potluck dinner at GLSC and fireworks again after dark. No better way to celebrate than with family and friends. God Bless America.
