Holding tank odor

The holding tank of my 1997 Catalina 28 is permeated and smells bad. None of the hoses smells, and there is no bad odor in the head. We put only liquids in the toilet, but the previous owner may have done differently. Is there anything I can do to reduce the odor, like soak the holding tank for a month in vinegar & water or something else?

I'd flush the tank with fresh water, many times,

fill half full and sail on a rough day, flush, then I use Odorlos which adds oxygen. Try posting this on the Headmistress forum also, Peggy's the expert.
