I am currently looking at a 1959 Alden 925B it's a Hinckley Built Wood 42' Yawl that looks a lot like Shanti.

I am hoping to get any info anyone has on this hull, and maybe the boat itself. Original name was Belatrix no named Night Wind.
She has been on the hard for at least three years, has some separation on coach roof where fiberglass over marine plywood. I am seriously considering taking the plunge and joining the wooden boat world. I will not change much to the boat other than making her bristol crisp.

Thanks. She has been on hard for three years at least. I am at the beginning of the courtship. Time will tell if I marry her or not.

Jon,
Gorgeous boat! I am new to wood boats of this size. Had a plywood Jonboat that I ran around ponds. Lots of sanding and painting. I am pretty certain I am in for lots more of that with the added bonus of varnish. Grew up sailing late 70's thru early 90's plastic boats. I haven't had a proper sailboat is 30years, but I am at the age I want to slow down and have the therapy of restoring.

Am I correct in assuming that the hull you have is the same hull I am looking at? Of course the interior would be diff, but everything else should be the same...or is that incorrect?

How are the different? Please educate me on the differences.
What are the areas I need to be concerned about?
What are some no go issues I could see before I pay for a survey?
Looks like you are in Midwest, do you know of any east coast surveyors that know wood boats?

There are loads more questions, but they are putting the cart before the horse for sure

is the hinckley a centerboard boat? prolly is

aeolus has a fiberglass hull, made by hullmatic in England. then the bare hull was shipped to Denmark and a wood deck, trunk, and interior were built. Molich was one of the top builders in the world at that time.
alden was transitioning to fiberglass during that era

I have seen a few Molich Aldens, but I haven't seen another Hinckley. I have asked the broker to send me some more pics, but while I am waiting I am wanting to see that hull, ore of the deck layout etc.
The boat is in Maine, about 14 hours from where I am so wanting as much info before i do the drive

see this cabin trunk? see this beautifull interior? 38' alden challenger. centerboard boat. where you sail, a centerboard vessel would be a nice fit.

and it's a fiberglass hull.

fun question: how long does a wood hull boat last before a major rebuild?

All depends on maintenance.
That's why I will have a well recommended surveyor.

That Alden 38" is sweet.

i love to sail. willing to do the work. sightseeing is nice, but it is the sailing that i so love.

i know men that love to restore boats. watched one man restore a 48' S&S wood racer from the late 40's. made strong and beautiful again. took one sail down the bay and back, about 6 miles total and then sold it. he loved restoring things.

what do you want to do?

that alden is very sweet. lots of wood to enjoy, plenty of work to maintain, but a strong overbuilt glass hull. it's the best (or worst) of both worlds.
