I need some suggestions. I have a depth finder mounted through the cabin bulkhead next to the companionway, (Catalina 27,) which needs to come out. The LED readout is toast and I want to send it in for repair. The problem is that I can only get one of the mounting screws out, (goes through a ring/plate on the back of the instrument and screws into the back of the outer ring/lip on the face.) There are three screws holding this ring in place. My fear is that the PO used 5200 to seal it when he installed it or possibly loctite on the screws. Does anyone know of something that might loosen up either product so I can get my depth finder display out for repair? Regards, Lysle

Removal

Lysle: You may not like my suggestion, but a dummel with a cutting wheel will take care of the bolts. As for the 5200 after cutting off the bolts there should be some play and a utility knife inserted along the back edge of the outside flange should give you enough to get it loose enough to remove....Cost will be three new "stainless" bolts for reinstallation. Good Luck!

What make of depth sounder?

If its a datamarine, all you have to do is remove the stainless steel 'ring' found on the inside of the cabin and the unit will just slide out. No drilling required! That's what i did with mine. If it's not datamarine, I'm not sure.

Dave, Yes, It's a Datamarine but...

The screws that hold the ring (inside the cabin) will not budge; except for one which came out easily (approx. center, bottom.) I have bent a couple of screwdrivers trying to remove the other two. They look similar to set screws. (at least the one I got out does.) Any other ideas? Regards, Lysle

Try Sears

Craftsman tools at sears has a drill bit that is designed to remove damaged screws. That might work.

There are no screws that hold the ring..

The 'ring' has the diameter similar to a coat hanger, and is not attached by screws. Actually this ring isn't a complete circle either. Its hard to see, but if you look closely at the back of the unit you should see it. Unless there isn't one or a replacement has been jury rigged. try me a dbousquet@aol.com if you have more questions.
