Hi All,

Happy MLK day.
I have an old Johnson 2 HP I got from some kid who was selling his old timer neighbor's stuff.
It is like new, guy bought it in 1976, was underpowered, didn't want to tell the missus he fd up, got another and she was none the wiser, then just left it in the storage unit.

Anyway, enough with the happy stories.
If you have one of these or had.
What oil do you recommend for it ?

Best I can find is
Quicksilver 858021Q01 Premium Two-Cycle TC-W3 Oil - Outboards, PWC, Snowmobiles, Motorcycles and Chainsaws
I assume anything none synthetic ?

Then someone mentioned getting a Fuel Stabilizer.
Sta-Bil 360 or should I skip this if I plan to run the engine every month on schedule to make sure it is seaworthy.
Ran great today.

Then just add regular gas with CA prices....

Ratio.
I assume 50:1.

I can't tell what size this tank is, but I'll figure that out later.

And last but not least.
What do you do for spare gas ?
Do you get a ye old Gerry or Jerry can and mount it on the rails I assume the metal one will rust quickly,
The generic Fuel tanks we have at the club look like they would leak in the lazarettes when my boat heels
Maybe the Rollpax 1.5 and mount it next to the engine ?

Thanks for the sanity check and help.

I'm not sure what boat youre using it on but I used to stick a 5 gallon can under the tiller up against the transom of my 25' boat. It was basically dead space anyways. I used a two gallon jerry can with my 4hp Tohatsu.

The QuickSilver is decent. Amsoil is the best I've used. I had a 78 OMC Saildrive, 94ish 4hp Tohatsu, 94 Evinrude 9.9 and still have a 94 Evinrude 140. All two stroke.

Tiny AVON R3-10, same deal.
Another owner who bought the wrong size, got another one that was twice the size and 30 years later decided to sell it.
So not much room in it.

It is a new old engine and it may not use 50:1 mix. Check with Johnson. Also I would advise we you to only use non-ethyl gas. Common fuel with ethyl will destroy the carb.

You can find the manuals for that online. I had one of those and it is the easiest motor to repair. It was built in a time and manner where clearances and tolerances weren't all that detailed, so it is pretty rugged and forgiving. It won't matter the brand of 2-stroke oil you use, and 50:1 is correct.

Check with Johnson
They are long gone. Even their headquarters was leveled a decade or two ago. They left that land in such bad shape that it was declared a superfund site. The street name is still Sea Horse drive.

There's a shut down coal power plant and an asbestos disposal field right across the street so I guess it fits right in. Oh what a strange town Waukegan, IL is...

A nice read.....

Personally, I liked my Two Stroke Cagiva Mito 125 the best when I lived in Europe
but I heard CA is very much anti 2 stroke so that must have killed the company.

Only 11 gas stations in the whole of CA sell that.
How bad is it on the carb ?

Why my 140hp motor is a two stroke is beyond me. They even had a 300hp V8 version of the same engine. Someone there really liked two strokes. You might just be right

Practical sailor has done a bunch of testing and articles on the subject. Here's one of them

The ethyl absorbs water and the water corrodes the aluminum carb. The corrosion plugs the small passages and the carb becomes toast and then requires either complete disassembly or replacement.
You can buy E0 fuel at small engine shops . It's called Tru-gas, but a gallon is about $30. If you don't use very much, that is a solution. You could also try small airports and see if they will sell you AVGAS that has no ethyl.
