Newport Newport 17 Lake Huron
Hi, I just got a Newport 17 from out of state and am very excited about it. I am quickly discovering it is a project and nothing remotely close to me beloved Sunfish. I have not found and good diagrams on the net or even pics detailed enough. I am perticuliarily interested in how to attach the ssails, Its not as apparant as I had hoped. Any direction or rescorces will be appriciated. Thanks, Dan :bang:

Dan, Bill,

I have a Newport 17. Will be glad to help with any questions although this is my first season sailing so I still have some of my own.
Brad's links are right on. Join the yahoo Lockley group. Not real active but a lot of resources and photos. Over the winter I started at thread 1 and read eavery N17 thread. Found a lot of good info.
The manual will give you some good info.
I have photos of most of my rigging connections.

Do you have pics of your interior, this winter I am redoing the inside, installing bow pulpit, and building a galley. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Yea I copy everything on web site even the pics of the n17 still trying to get pics of a finish interior. It's amazing there are no pics out there of the original interior?

Hi Dan,
No big deal if you have two people on the job. Attach the side stays after you have pinned the mast to the aft holes in the tabernacle. Hoist the mast with the jib halyard or some suitably attached line and attach the forestay. Balance tension as required to keep the mast stable. The manual says not to tighten the rigging "drum tight", but gives no specs. I use a tension gauge to equalize the shrouds and then tension the forestay as needed to keep rigging deflection in check. Sail the boat and adjust as you feel the need. Once the shrouds are adjusted lock them in because this will make raising and stepping of the mast simpler.Steel will stretch so check tension periodically.
Hope This Helps,

Cap'n Red

Bill,
Nothing in my boat's interior except the fiberglass shell. There is one molded in compartment under the mast position that has a wooden lid. At the site Merlinuxo linked to there is a pic of a N17 interior which shows V Berth cushions and compression post under the mast foot. My boat does not have the cushions and does not have a compression post. No sign it ever had one. I am too big and old to make use of the cabin for anything other than storage.
I have seen several photos of N17s with bow pulpits. Mine does not have one so I am interested how you do yours.

Dan,
The only thing I would add to RedRex's procedure is the mast foot hing plate has holes front and back. My PO would put pins in both once the mast was raised but the manual says only to use one pin.

RedRex,
You had said previously you had your N17 at Mariner's and probably knew what slip I was in. I ended up on the floating dock. Great location to sail out of.
Do you know if there is enough water at low tide to sail straight out of the marina between the mud island near the ramp and the grassy point? This would allow me to avoid taking the channel all the way around.

This is great, thanks! I ordered some SS hardware from Unicorn and am taking apart the OB now. I'll keep you posted, Dan

Ward,
There is not enough water in that area. Stay with the channel and avoid grounding and the occasional crab trap.
Have a blast,

Bill,
I had to replace a rail base fitting when I redid my boat and found reasonable prices at sailorman http://sailorman.com/product_list.php?id=905.

Hi Ward,

Hope all is well. Could you please forward the photos of the rigging connections for the N17? Thanks. Also, if you could walk me through which color line was used for what, I would greatly appreciate it.

Hi Jim,
Good to hear form you.
Green - Starboard - Main sail halyard
Red - Port - Jib Halyard
Blue - Port - Jib Downhaul
Black - Reef lines
Blue at mast head - Topping Lift - Holds end of boom up.
Plus there is a short white line to pull the front of the boom down. This ties to the cleat under the boom.

Photo 1 & 2 - Main sheet boom to traveler.
Photo 3 - Forestay before I installed the downhaul.
Photo 4 - Jib halyard (red) and downhaul (blue). Block (pulley) connects to long shackle which is connected to bottom hole of chain plate. You raise the jib using the red line and pull it down using the blue line.
Photo 5 - Blue downhaul goes through fairlead to jam cleat. White jib sheets go through side fairlead back to cleat. Note shroud connection (side stay). Note photos are with old main sail.

Note on the rear traveler. While you can adjust it side to side I found it much easier to leave it tightly cleated to center.

Hope these help.
