I just prchased an old (but in good shape) furler drum and upper swivel (SEE ATTACMENT). The problem now is how to make it functional on my 8.0C

I have seen several designs and obviously my challenge is how to attach it to my jib and make it roll.

ALL IDEAS WELCOME

THANKS

you may want to find out who made it ...then contact them and see if they have a manual on your model.....and also make sure it is large enough for your application..

You may able to combine these two part with the concept of a PVC furler. I have seen some designs which allow you to continue to use your hank on sail by using PVC spacers between the hanks. Still need a drum at the bottom...which you have...and the top swivel (I assume that it swivels) will help with furled shape.

Wow, that looks old!

It also looks like the left side is the TOP roller, attached via sail shackles to the bottom rolling drum on the right. Like ewoden said, I looks like you'd need to mod your jib to attach a luff wire, as it seems this roller does not use an extrusion. It rolls the sail up around its own luff. The luff wire acts as the forestay (which is removed).

It looks like luff wire is the answer. The size looks ok since at my marina we have same size boats with smaller furlers. Thanks for the replies

You might want to check with a rigger to see if your new unit will be OK on your 8.0C. That's a pretty big boat to have the forestay pressures carried by a wire luff. Take a look at Harken's site, then make furlers like this for smaller boats.

- - Somerset,
What you have is a wire luff furler. These were popular before the advent of furlers with foils. That would be set aft of the headstay with a sail that had a wire luff. The drum would rotate the wire luff and the sail around it. Your headsail would need a wire luff in it, similar to a head stay.

I do not plan to use the luff wire as the forestay. I plan to use the jib halyard to connect to the top swivel

Thanks

That would sort of take care of the top. But the bottom; where are you going to mount the drum? I'm assuming that the toggle on the top of the drum rotates with the drum. If thats the case, the drum cannot be use with the existing forestay, and would have to be mounted a foot or so behind it to allow the drum to turn and not hit it. (if I see all of that right)

It's like Ted said.

Some wire-furler units like these (some of Harkens) have a way for the forestay to pass INSIDE this unit, and rotate around it. This one AFAICT does not.

My bow has four attachment points. The most fwd is for the forestay and the other three are free to use.

While checking my working jib( which I had never taken out of the bag) realized than it was fitted with a luff wire. Tomorrow I will install on the boat. This setup does not need a sacrificial sleeve since it is removable. I have attached several pix wondering if this system could be reefable.

All comments welcome.

looking at your pics i would say that is a hank on jib meaning that it goes on the fore stay wire ......i dont think you can furl the sail as it is now with out a set of foils on the fore stay wire and a luff rope sewed on to the sail ...you may want to contact a sail loft and get some recomendations from him or her ......

Ha ha my bad. In my illl spent youth I had a '72 Maverick with a swapped in 351 shoehorned in between torched shock towers. It was , um, squirrelly.

check it on youtube

Just like a previous replied said, this furler was used in conjuncture with a luff wire instead of the modern foils found today. My working jib was modified in such way and today I got it to work. I used the jib halyard to raise the sail and atop I spaced the swivel from the forestay using a turnbuckle. This turnbuckle keeps the sail from twisting the jib halyard. With a moderate wind ( on the hard), I managed to furl and unfurl the jib. I believe this setup can be effective in reefing the jib as well. I know this setup is not as effective as a new foil system but it allows me to furl the Jib quickly an safely. Check the pics. This was possible using a $70 drum and swivel a bit of luck.

check out the link on youtube. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZY0Dzszx7vc

all comments are greatly appreciatted and welcome

I thought about it but hesitant about the prolonged tension on my jib halyard. My halyard seems to be in good shape, but as a first time sailor I tend to be over cautious
